I would be very grateful for any assistance with a search for a birth of Louisa Attwood in Timaru (supposedly 13/11/1874).

I have conflicting evidence from sources in Australia. They both agree that my ancestor (William Attwood) and his wife (Jane nee Wyer/Wire/Weir/Wyre) emigrated from Staffs or Worcs, UK around 1869 and left for Newcastle, Aus, in 1871 - possibly aboard a freighter, name unknown.

If this seems confused, it reflects how I feel.

Only Louisa or anything near it I can find on NZ BMD site is;

Annie Louisa ATTWOOD 1872
Reg 1872/1272
No parents names or district reg is shown

There is am unnamed ATTWOOD born NSW Australia, parents William and Jane 1885 and a Benjamin 1879, same parents.


AH HA just reread your post after 1869 when they left England in NZ there is this possible birth also

Can you post William dob if you know it, death etc and Janes too please. Also parents names if possible.
I can find no marriage for a William Attwood to Jane Ware etc etc anywhere in England pre 1869 only 1 to a Jane Beer

There are 2 possible deaths of a William ATTWOOD in NSW early 1900's and a Jane Attwood 1885 in Lambton, parents Samuel and Sarah.
Interestingly both the births reg above in NSW to a William/jane Attwood are in Lambton/Newcastle where death for Jane is reg.

A Louisa was in school Fortrose, Southland 1876, guardian Edward Attwood.
One could be mother and daughter??
May help for elimination purposes.

An Annie Attwood is also at Fortrose School 1876, father/guardian Robert Attwood.
An ANnie Louisa ATTWOOD marries 1893 to MALLERSTAT

Yes, I found that one too! I have ordered that cert to see. Just now have to be paitient a while until it gets here.  (Dunno about NZ, but NSW BDM takes 3 weeks to find and print it, even when you've given them the reference, and then there's the snail mail time lag as well.

William and Jane moved to Newcastle (Aus) after a couple of years in Timaru. hey had one son (my G-G-G'father) and a daughter with them. From this computer, I cannot get the details (it's on my lappy) of Wm and Jane's birth, although the dates aren't exact. I believe both were born 1844ish.

The Benjamin and the unnamed are almost certainly mine. Unnamed because she died the same day she was born, and was the cause of her mother's deat on that day too. Not a goo day, in all respects, that one!

Thanks for the efforts you've made. I doubt the Robert Attwood connection is viable, as there are no Roberts in the line until quite a bit later than the time I am talking about. Also, if Louisa was born in Timaru, she would have to have been very much the "child bride" as they left after a couple of years for Newcastle.

If it's any help, Louisa Hendon Attwood born in NZ in 1869,  and

Annie Louisa Attwood born 1872, were both registered in Dunedin, not Timaru.

Thanks for the extra info.

Since William was a miner (had come from coal mines in Worcs) is/was there a mining boom around there in the 1800s? Just trying to flesh out the reason for the, fairly significant, decision to move.
