I'm Stumped! Where Was 2 X Gr. Grandpa Born??
« on: Friday 10 July 09 03:14 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find where my gr.gr.grandfather, Alexander Baines, was born. According to his marriage record,in 1862 Liverpool,he was full age,an engineer, living on Bridgewater St.. He was a son of John Baines, wheelwright.
In 1871,he is listed as  Alexander Beans,30 yrs. old,a smith, born in Manchester, living with wife and children in Toxteth Park.
In 1881, he is listed as Alexander Baines,40 yrs. old,an iron furnaceman, born Liverpool and living in Sculcoates,Yorks.
He came to the U.S. and was living in Phila.,Pa. in 1900,listed as 59 yrs. old, born in Mar. 1841 England.

I have not been able to locate a birth record on BMD for 1841 +/- 2 yrs. He is not the Alexander Bains b. 1841 in S.Shields,Durham ( according to census records). Possibly, Alexander was his middle name?

I haven't located the family in 1841,1851 or 1861 census, in hope of solving the mystery. In 1861,an Alexander Baines,20 yrs. old b. Sheffield,Yorks.,a labourer in an iron foundry, was a boarder in Newton,Lancs. I'm not sure this is  the correct one, as there is no Alexander born in Sheffield around 1841.

Any help or suggestions would be so appreciated.
Thanks,
Nancy

Hi Nancy,
Could you tell us who Alexander married?

There does not seem to be a marriage on free bdm in 1862 for Alexander Bains in Liverpool. There is one in London.
or
There is one for Alexander Bain in 1860 Liverpool to either
Blackburn  Elizabeth
 Blackham  Elizabeth
Foulkes  Ellen

FreeBMD has births for Alexander Bain - one in Tynemouth, 2 in Salford, around the right time. Could one of these be your man?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi MariaC,Iggy and lizdb,
My Alexander was married in 1862 to Mary Ireland. My problem is not being able to find the birth record for Alexander around 1841, as well as not finding him and parents (John) in the 1841,51 and 61 census.

Possibly Alexander was born as John Alexander Baines,so I will check out any Johns born during the 1st & 2nd. qtr. of 1841. If he was born after the 1841 census, then he wouldn't appear until 1851.But where was his father,John in 1841? Maybe father, John, had died by 1851?

If John could be found in 1841 or 1851, maybe that would shed some light.
Maybe the Baines surname is badly misspelled?

Thank you for the help. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Best wishes,
Nancy
