Armitages from Ireland to Canada

Can anyone help me out?  I have gone as far back as an "Old" William Armitage.  Then I hit a brick wall.

Full Civil registration started here in Ireland in 1864.

Post about this family on Beginners Board yesterday-

???I have been looking for a group of Armitages that went from Ireland approx 1836, one being "Old" William Armitage and sons R(h)ody, Francis, Luke and Joseph, some stayed in Ontario whereas the others went to Pontiac County, Quebec.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi

1. You do not have much to go on, as you do not have even a county.

2. If you look in Griffiths which records tenants around 1850 and covers all Ireland, you will see 120 Armitage entries. They are spread over Ireland, but you could plot a distribution to perhaps eliminate some counties.

3. If you look at the expensive Irish Family History foundation site you will see they have 360 Armitage births. However this site is not comprehensive, and just depends on what records they have acquired. For what it is worth (and not a lot) the first Armitage births they have are in Tipperary from early 1800s.

4. If Tipperary, you could look at Bruce Elliots book on the Talbot Migration which covers a migration to Canada from Tipperary around 1815. There are Armitages in it and you can get the details by interrogating that Google book reference above

 :-[I am so-ooo stupid, it is Tipperary, the county that is.  I had been looking for so long that I for got to add that very important piece of information.  Sorry about that, thanks for all the information just the same, I may need it yet.

In North Tipperary, which accounts for 91 of the 120 Armitage references in Griffiths, the bulk of them are around Nenagh (YOUGHALARRA parish)  and around Modreeny (not far from Nenagh). Plus an further 21 round Dunkerrin and Templeharry in Offaly (same neck of the wood as Modreeny)

You would have enough confidence from that to read the microfiches of those 4 parishes for the time period you are interested in.

Your problem then is that William is a very common christian name! "Old William Armitage" is not a lot to go on. You need at least dates, and his childrens names may give a clue.

In June 1862 a William Armitage (son of William Armitage) married  Mary Anne Green at Templemore, Co Tipperary.
