« on: Thursday 09 July 09 21:01 BST (UK) »
Please can you help with marriage reg 1873 April/May/June.  Poplar

On the page there is a Charles Capel May reg No  1c  1196.

But at the bottom of the page hand written is a Ernest C May reg No 1c 1196a.

What does it mean two people with the same reg no.

thank you cockneylass

There are usually 2 marriages on a page - so there will be 4 people with the same ref.

A handwritten entry at the bottom of an index page means it was missed out and added later.

An 'a' after a page number, I think, means that an 'extra' page was put in, so that is probably why it was missed in the index and later added.

Who did they marry?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi Cockneylass
welcome to rootschat  :)
looking at the record and census records for 1871, 1861
it looks as though the marriage of ernest is inserted into existing records-hence the addition of
an "a" to create an additional record in amongst the existing run of numbers. My first thought was that this might be a family double wedding of brothers-May is a relatively unusual surname, but earlier census dates don't put Charles and Ernest in the same family

Hello, Regarding marriage cert 1873, Re Charles, Capel May & Ernest May.
Well I have now looked in the Parish regcords in Ancestry, and it appears that the marriage names have been changed. From Charles to Ernest in 1924. with John May & Ernest May as witnesses.
In the margin on the marriage cert it gives the details of the change. Hence Ernest being added to the marriage records after.

Would the change be legal and if it is would there be legal documents for this,?.

Has anyone come across this before in there records?.

I thought that the marriage cert was a legal document and could not be changed.

I would like to know why Ernest and Charles changed. I cannot find a Charles Capel May in the family

Also they have changed the fathers name and added Capel to it.

please help.

Thank you Cockneylass

Maybe someone wrote Charles by mistake, and the entry was corrected to Ernest, rather than a change of name for someone.

After all, if someone later changed their name. their marriage entry would remain as a record in their old name.
