george jacques grocers -barbridge stoke nantwich
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 20:58 BST (UK) »
Hi I am looking for any further information on my gt gt gt grandfather George Jacques and his family. George was born in Wem/Wear Shropshire in or around 1816. His wifes name was Elizabeth. Children include George ,Jessie, Reuben ,Annie and Thomas. The family are on the 1861 census as living in Audlem Cheshire. In 1871 they are living in Barbridge and George is a canal porter. I know from at least  1878 to 1890(when he died) George was a Master Grocer in Barbridge .However i can't not find the full address of the property. The post office directory, census returns and his death certificate just state grocers shop,Barbridge Nantwich. There was also another grocers shop in the village in 1881 occupied by the Brimclow family.Looking on old maps it only seems to be a small village with a small number of properties.Stoke Bank and Stoke cottage appear on the same census page as the shop.Georges son ,George ,his wife emily and their first son thimothy also lived in a cottage in the village in 1881, again full address unknown.
I would love to know if anyone has any further info on the family and the village, esp any pics! Thanks in advance.

The 1881 isn't very helpful is it - address Grocers shop Stoke and the surrounding property is just Stoke Cottages

The previous page has Stoke Hall home of Edward Charlesworth and then the next 3 dwellings are cottages followed by the grocers shop

Then 3 more cottages and then Stoke Bank which appears to be a farm

So he was the 4th property after Stoke Hall

I cant find any mention of a barbridge in stoke nantwich
in 1883 Slaters directory Liverpool/ Cheshire. In Natwich It gives 6 greengrocers 3 in hospital street 2 in welch row and 1 in high street. So thats not a village as one of the building is 140. Found Barbrige but village probably long gone.

Ive got a feeling some of the original buildings mentioned on the census are still there ie Stoke cottage(you can google map it). Unless a new property has been built and give the same name.Think im going to have to take a trip to Barbridge myself and have a nose round !

Hello Swirly, have a look at the cheshire tithe maps online at the following address.
In the place search: enter Stoke and enlarge the view to show the village.
It is right next to Barbridge (a couple of miles West from Nantwich) and you can see the limited number of cottages.
If you have the patience to check the way the enumerator was walking against these images you might be lucky and get a fair picture of the grocers shop.
The Tithe Maps are not the exact date you are looking for but should help in pinpointing a little better.
Regards
Kathb

Hi thanks for the reply. I've had a look at the maps. According to the census in 1881 its Stoke cottage , then the  grocers, cottage, cottage, cottage and then Stoke bank(now called Bank farm ). But looking at the old maps and the modern there is only one other property (that i can see!) between Stoke cottage and Stoke bank farm.It was then called Stoke villa now called Holly tree cottage. Unless Ive totally missed something the only thing i can think of is that the four cottages where part of the farm buildings??
