The National Archives of Australia has  the WW1 record  for  this man.  IT says  he was born in Poplar England and gives his mother Mrs Hill as his nok.

He was supposed to be 21 years old in 1915, so would most likely rule him out.

The man in  the record was was Ethel R, so  would be  the marriage you  found,

Anyhow have a look at  the record for your self,  search as guest.

kind thoughts Jenn

Looking for a corresponding birth there is one in 1897 Poplar England,  this George W  Garnett appears on  the 1901 census along with  his mother Eleanor a Widow and a sister.

So if if he did put his age up a bit to join up I  don't  think  that it is  the one you are chasing.

You  would  only  know for sure if you brought a copy of  the marriage certificate  which  will give you  his parents names,

I see on the Ryerson Index that the George W who died in 1957 had a death notice in the SydneyMorning Herald, 28 May 1957.  Next time I'm at the National Library - probably not till  mid-late next week - I'll have a look but it posssibly won't give any more info.

Allan,

Did you  find him on  the 1911 census?  Did you  check  to see if  was in WW1?

Yes - he is on 1911 in Skipton, Yorks -
there are a number of George or William Garnetts, on the Ancestry WW1 records, but not one I could identify positively, although I found his brother, who survived.
