Griggs family Leeds
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 18:17 BST (UK) »
I have just viewed the 1911 census regarding my Griggs ancestors. To my amazement I found that my 2 x Great Grandparents Robert Griggs and Hannah Sayner had 11 children prior to the 1911 census. Only 4 of which were still living at the time of the census. I have looked on FreeBMD.org.uk and also on YorkshireBMD.org.uk but can't find traces of either the births or death of any of the deceased 7 Griggs children.

Robert Griggs and Hannah Sayner were married in Leeds in 1874
the living children were:
James (my Gt.Grandfather) b.1875
George Henry b.1877
Tom b.1879
Robert b.1881

Can anyone please offer any suggestions where I can look for them.

Have you tried searching the 1911 for the 7 children separately? For example, I searched for Elizabeth 1897 born Leeds and there may be a match in Leeds shows age as 14.

If there were any other female Griggs' in those 7 children, you could try looking on free bmd for a marriage record.

I did see an Elizabeth Hannah Griggs on freebmd  birth registered q/e Dec 1896, Leeds vol 9b page 477, could be your Elizabeth especially as her mother's name was Hannah.

Good luck searching

It may be that they were stillborn or late miscarriage and the parents put them down.  At that sort of date they should show up on FreeBMD.   Have you checked the church records for the parish where the other children were baptised?   They may show up as burials there.

1891 RG12; Piece: 3695; Folio 81; Page 25

has the children you name. Could it be an error - do the numbers definitely read as such.
If so Andrea's suggestion re the church would be good.

I have just looked at Yorkshire BMDs and Free BMD and can't spot any births with relevant deaths.
I think the 1911 census asks for children born alive. If the births were still births I don't think they would count because such births weren't registered. Perhaps the mother felt strongly enough to note them or perhaps it was an error.
She hadn't been married before had she? Previous births are also counted although 7 children is a lot :-\

Further to this and a better search  ::)

Possibility..

Birth 1883 :Eizabeth H
Death 1887 Elizabeth Hannah 3 yrs  Hunslet

that's the only one that seems to be the right place.

Thanks again Heywood for your efforts. It looks like a death end, if you pardon the pun.

I wonder if there is a way to search the church/parish registers online?
