Hunter Family - Tamlaghtfinlagen
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 16:34 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the ancestors of Paul Hunter bc. 1829 (possibly Ballinderry or area), emigrated to Canada in 1848 and died in Tamworth, Ontario, August 15, 1888.  Anyone else interested in this family?

Thank you, Marian

Welcome to Rootschat. There are several townlands named Ballinderry in Co. Londonderry (1 in Ballinderry Parish, 1 in Kilcronaghan Parish) but not Tamlaght-Finlagan Parish.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Are you sure it's Tamlaght Finlagan you are looking for?  There is another parish in Co Londonderry called Tamlaght which borders on the parish of Ballinderry - both are on the Londonderry/Tyrone border near Moneymore.

Sorry - I belive it should have been Ballykelly - if that is in the Clogan ara.

Paul Hunter born 1829
immigrated 1848 - arrived June 16, 1848 Philadelphia, age 19, arrived New York, departure Londonderry, origin Ireland, residence Londonderry.

His death registration only states - born in Ireland

In all my searches the only "Paul Hunter", I can find is 1831-1841, Tamlalught Finlegan #033, along with Michael #033 and John Hunter #033.

Also, from a document I received from PRONI, these 3 names appear as brothers, who are sons of a John Hunter of Cloghan (no wife named), who was a son of John Hunter and Mary Miller, John being a son of Andrew Hunter of Cloghan Farms, Tamlaght Finlaygan.

I realize that my Paul Hunter's father was not necessarily "Paul", but at least it was a start for me.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Townland is probably CLAGAN (meaning round, rocky hill) not Clogan.
Not sure about the sources of your other information.

Hi,
As well as Clagan in the Tamlaght Finlagan (Ballykelly) parish there are several other nearby Clagans and there is a further nearby townland in the Parish of Balteagh called Cloghan. It is also worth noting that Hunter was a very common name on Co. Londonderry.

Hi,
The Paul, John and Michael, #33 appear to have been taken from the 1831 census of Co. Londonderry but, like Aghadowey, I am unsure of the source of the "brothers" information.
