IGI has this marriage - extracted

8 April 1833
St James Bermonsey
Eliza Ann Cooke Winson

to Richard Stephens Hocking

(doesnt tie up with any of those Richard deaths!!!!, perhaps he dropped the Stephens bit and went as plain Richard)

But I think there is probably now enough evidence that this is your Henry's family.
Birth cert needed to finally clinch it.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

A long, long overdue" thank you" to Lizdb for all the information you unearthed for me. I am now getting back to send for a birth certificate for Richards son Henry.

Henrys father may not have been actually at the wedding. He could have just supplied that information.  So I am going to use all that lovely information to go forward.

Please forgive me for not replying sooner. I look after my husband, blind and diabetic and my dughter who is facing yet another operation on her kidney.

Kind regards to you

Hello lizb.

I have just received the birth certificate for  Henry Hocking.  You will be pleased to know that you were on the right track. As for me, I am delighted.

Henry's birth certificate does NOT name Richard as his father,  Birth 31/1/1844.  Registered 8/2/1844

It does name Eliza Ann formerly Wilson, as his mother. Residing at New St, Penzance.

Either Richard had died or was not around.

Thank you for all your lovely help. Never thought I would discover all this.  Wonderful!

Hi
Thanks for all the lovely information! I am descended from another of Richard's sons, George, b 1839. Incidentally, Eliza's maiden name must have been Winson, not Wilson, as the Winson name survived as a first name into the next generation. George's son's family went into Brushmaking.
I had no idea that the family were quite so well travelled - all my other relations are in the Bermondsey / Southwark area. Do you have any views on the ease (or otherwise) of travelling so far at the time? Would it have been to seek work in London, or perhaps he had contacts there?
I would be interested to know what happened to Richard (b.1836) and also to Eliza (b 1841) - who may have died in infancy,  and Henry, of course.

You are perfectly correct Katiej  the surname was Winson and not Wilson. A slip of the keys I think.
It was a rather long distance for that family to travel. But as Elizabeth Cooke -Winson was born Bermondsey  (married  8/4/1833, St James Church, Bermondsey. Witness Edward Cann and Sarah Wilson)  As Richard was born Cornwall.  His parents were  Richard and Hannah born Cornwall.  That could explain why they travelled so extensively.  Husband Richard died  at St Mary (Madron Chapelry) Penzance 20/10/1841 aged 27.

Son Richard is a Shoemaker in the 1851 census age 15 years.  Have not located Dughter Eliza born 1841.

I see George married Matilda  Taylor Gee and lived Southwark Surrey. Son George born Nottingham.

I think I have got that correct.  In my search there were other Hocking families in London and most certainly in Cornwall.  Eliza and Richard must have gone back to Cornwall as maybe he was already ill and wanted to be where he was born and amongst his own family. Eliza went on to have other children (no marriage )  Hope this helps you further. If you need any more info and I have it, will be pleased to let you have it.
