Richard HOCKING - Truro
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 16:27 BST (UK) »
I have a RICHARD HOCKING a Carpenter/Joiner  on the marriage certificate of his son  HENRY HOCKING who married  Louisa Roberts of South Stoneham, Southampton  6/6/1865.

On the marriage certificate Henry says he was born Truro.   I think about 1843 give or take.

So far I have not been able to find him with a father of Richard in Truro

Whether his father was alive then I do not know.

The closest I can get is the 1851 census which says--

Eliza Ann Cook Hocking age 36 born Bermondsey.
Son Richard  15  born Cornwall.  Shoemaker  born Cornwall.
George W   12  Blacksmith  born Bermondsey.
Henry 7 years. born Cornwall

As the father could have been absent on that dayof the census I assume that he is the father Richard.  I have sent for one birth certificate for Henry, and yes, it was the wrong one.  Can I ask for help to assertain that the above is the correct family and maybe Henrys date of birth??

Can we have a bit of clarification please?

You say Henry was born Truro - where did this come from, as marriage certs dont give places of birth?

Have you found Henry and his wife in later censuses, is his place and year of birth consistant then?

Here is Henry in 1871. You may have this, but it does help build up a picture of his movements.

Yes, the 1851 that you have found does seem to be quite a possibility - esp with the link with Surrey/Sth London

But there is more to it than you listed!

HO107 1918 582 24
Adelaide Street , Madron

Eliza Ann Cook Hocking 36 widow bn Bermonsey
Richard 15 shoemaker bn Penzance
George 12 blacksmith bn Bermonsey
Henry 7 bn Penzance
William 2 bn Penzance
James J 10 mths bn Penzance

So unless there was a bit of hanky panky going on, Eliza must have only recently been widowed, well within the previous 19 months.

Little James's middle initial leads me to this:

Birth
Jul/Aug/Sep 1850
Penzance 9 201
James Joseph Hocking

His birth cert would indicate if Eliza had been married to a Richard or not, but would not confirm for sure if he was also Henry's father - though marriage cert of Henry has given you that.

Is this the one you sent for?

Henry Hocking
Jul/Aug/Sep 1844
Penzance 9 252

If not, that seems most likely.

There seem to be 3 possible deaths for husband Richard - if indeed husband WAS Richard!

1848 Richard
1849 Richard Edward
1849 Richard Warren

This could be the confirmation that this is the right family - ie the husband was Richard, a carpenter!
