It's all so exciting, but very confusing at the same time.

Thanks, really.  I never thought for one second that anyone would reply with information.  So to get all this, well I'm overwhelmed, really.

I shall take my information now and work out what to do next.... Marriage certificates by the sounds of it.

:D

There seems to have been quite a few Galtress in the Birkenhead area.  I found at least 3 marriages for Galtress, an Albert, a Lily and a Charles, none of which any of us have mentioned so far.

There seem to have been quite a few Galtress in Birkenhead area.  I've found marriages in the late 1930s for at least 3, whose names are not on the list I found, nor on the 1901 census that Woody found.

If you get stuck...just ask on here and people are more than willing to help..

I will not post anything else (unless you ask ) because the fun is finding your ancestors yourself :)

another good site for you to use would be this one..

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=/eng/search/ancestorsearchresults.asp

It does show quite a few Galtress's from the Liverpool area.

Hi Emma,

there must have been another marriage Davis/Galtress in Birkenhead as there is a birth for 1932, too early for Doris.

Hi Livingdeadgirl, welcome to RootsChat

If you go to

http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

& look through the marriages you will find 9 entries, and unlike FreeBMD these list the Church the marriage took place in, or tell you if it was a Registry Office wedding.

Thomas married Gertrude Harrison in St. Catherine's Church Tranmere.

Might also be an idea to post on the Cheshire board.

All the best

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat

There is a marriage of Lawrence Williams to Doris Galtress or Davis in the March quarter of 1949 in Birkenhead ref 10a 122

This may mean Doris was married twice Hence the two names

Barbara

Thanks for this info!  It puzzled me greatly as I never knew my Grandmother had a previous marriage, until my Mother just mentioned it.

Turns out, the Davis she was married to was abusive and a drunk.  I think they had children, two boys who died either stillborn or at a very early age.  But that isn't confirmed, just yet.

It's exciting to think there might be more to my family than I first thought :)

Hi, only me again.  Been sat at this laptop since my first post and I have to say I've managed to piece together quite a bit of history so far, but only on my Grandmothers side (Doris Galtress)

I'm struggling to get any sort of info about my Grandfather, all I can find (records-wise) is his death certificate.  I always thought he was born and bred in the Wirral.  But a search of his birthday reveals two Laurence Williams's born in Dec 1921, one in Huddersfield (mothers maiden name - Thewlis) and the other born in Hackney (mothers maiden name - Little).

I'm guessing the only way of knowing is to buy both of their birth certificates, right?
