Hi

I am also researching the Heeley family and have found this info interesting. John Theophilus Heeley was my husband's great grandfather. I hadn't heard of a wife called Helen.  Thanks all for the info

John Theophilus Heeley was my mum's great grandfather. One point missed in the discussion is that he was a ship's doctor on the Moana which sailed the Sydney Vancouver route in the early 1900's...a few years before he died. This is a quote from the Australasian medical Gazette from July 20 1910.

I think that he went to Nevada because he was having some sort of legal trouble with his business partner, Dr.John Daly Walker  in 1852. He ran a pratice with him in 31 Anglesea Road Woolwich. Also said that he ran a pratice with his uncle, Dr. Joseph Heeley just before he went to Nevada..... but I don't think that this is correct.

He was also a successful squatter in Wakatipu in NZ and made lots of money with sheep...then he sold them for cattle and they all died from pleuro so he sold up and went to Victoria.

Sadly... after all my (about 2 years worth) of research, it turns out I am not related to the Heeleys :( (one name out of place led me down the wrong path :( ) ... but, after so long researching them, Ive grown fond of these distant figures, so... Im making myself as of now an honarary Heeley LOLOL ... for I want to keep on researching them... ty Wakatipu for the great reply!! I had got about the Moana somewhere, dont know much of it, just the name (and I think i found a image of it online, but its been a while since Ive been on the Heeley line now so...)
But as to John being in partnership at one point w his uncle joseph, this is very very possible, as in one census he was living in Josephs household I knew the Anglesey road part (and he has a whole other family too than his later ones..) and the practice w Dr Daly... and that he was working with cattle in NZ, but didnt know "where".. so thats good too :) as to his Nevada travels, sadly I havent found anything yet:( other that he had gone there, so Id love to find more on that too...

No worries...I have being trying to track down where he ran his medical practice in Seymour, Victoria. The website below says that he was actually a medical officer for the construction of the rail line which runs from Melbourne to Wodonga (the first half leg to Sydney).
Perhaps that is why we can't find where he lived.

I found the medical practice where he operated from in Young .....he was also Mayor of the local Council twice and a freemason....2 more leads on his life and character.

cheers

Hi Wakatipu

I am related to John Theophilus Heeley via his son Edmund Heeley. How are you related?

I passed through Seymour at the beginning of the year and had a look around. I purchased a book on Seymour history and it mentions Dr Heeley in it and a bit of information about his father-in-law Peter Tiernan.

Both my brother-in-law and I are trying to gather info on Dr Heeley. I hadn't heard of him being on the Moana. Where did you get that info from.

Just as a little bit of side info I am currently in Sydney celebrating Gwen Heeley's 100th birthday.

Regards
