Robert Meikle of Lesmahagow

I'm trying to trace the birth and also the parents of Robert Meikle, who was born sometime prior to 1770, I believe in Lesmahagow. He married Agnes Stobbo, of Stonehouse, in Lesmahagow in March 1801. I'd appreciate any help that's available. Many thanks in advance.

I have a transcription of the 1821 census for Lesmahagow that has Robert Meikle and Agness (sic) Stobbo living at Kypes Waterhead. This census didn't name all the household but did give numbers of those living at each address. There are 4 males and 3 females living there including Robert and Agness. Birth years are: 2 males born between 1807-11, 1 born 1801-1806, 1 born 1762-1771. Females: 1 born 1812-1816, 1 born 1801-06, 1 born 1762-71.
There is also living in the next listed dwelling (which may or may not be next door), a William Meikle at Kypes Waterhead. A household of 1 male born between 1732-41, and 1 (unnamed) female born between 1732-41. Maybe Robert's father and mother?

Thanks for that PP. I had seen the 1821 census, but I wasn't aware of the ages. I had been hoping for confirmation that William was his father and getting his mother's name too. But I'm still living in hope!

Just wondering from your last post www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,354491.0.html whether you had managed to check the names of the children showing to Robert and Agnes on SP following their marriage. Likely from that 1821 census that the William living 'next door' could well be Robert's father now that we have the additional info on age ranges for this William and maybe wife (mother?).

I think for children we have so far: William born c. 1802 and a Martha christened in 1815. Just wondering if we could make some guesses on possible names for Robert's mother from these names and then try and find records to start firming up

My other half is a direct descendent of Robert Meikle and Agnes Stobo. Unfortunately he has not been able to get details of Robert's parents but does have Agnes's.

Agnes was born 18/5/1770 in Stonehouse to James Stobo and Martha Alison.

Children of Robert and Agnes were

- William Meikle, b.27/9/1801, Kypewaterhead; d.17/4/1872, Kypewaterhead
- James Meikle, b.27/12/1803, Kypewaterhead
- Robert Meikle, b.9/11/1805, Kypewaterhead
- John Meikle, b.12/7/1808, Kypewaterhead
- Martha Meikle, b.20/11/1815, Kypewaterhead; d.5/6/1857, Kypeside

Both the replies came through one after another, and I was just about to send Monica the information I had on Robert and Agnes's children, but I never had the dates of death. I had the names of Agnes parents but I have no dates of marriage or birth for them. I don't suppose you have them in your records Tracy? Or an I being too optimistic? I'm amazed how much information I've been able to get since that first inquiry on James and William Scott that I put up not so long ago, that you, Monica, replied to. I only wish that my own ancestors had been so fruitful.

Sorry, no dates for marriage/birth of Agnes's parents but have births of Agnes's siblings

- Alexander, b.21/5/1760, Stonehouse
- Martha, b.24/6/1764, Stonehouse
- John, b.8/8/1766, Stonehouse
- Helen, b.11/3/1768, Stonehouse

I've had a look and can't find any marriage on IGI/SP for James Stobo and Martha Alison but given date of eldest child would expect it to be pre 1760.

There is a birth showing on the OPRs (SP) for a Robert Meikle to a William Meikle and Agnes Craig in 1768....I wonder if relevant?

On IGI there also seems to be two entries for daughters Agnes (would imagine first died) on 12 DEC 1768 and 24 DEC 1775.

Reference to Kypeside (Kypside/Koipside/Keipside) and Waterside

If you change the last number before 'x.htm' you get other years up to 1843 and Part 5. Tracey, strangely some of the births you have Robert and Agnes Stobbo show with different mother's name
