1861 Census - Search by Address?
« on: Monday 06 July 09 08:15 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Is it possible to search the 1861 by address? I can't find my ancestors in this census so I'd like to find out who is living at 6 Brown's Terrace, Camberwell, where they were living two years earlier.

Many thanks,
Carla

Thank you so much for your reply. Are you able to tell me where you found this information or tell me the surnames of anyone living at 25 Compton Place, St Pancras at the same time?

Thanks again,
Carla

There was no Compton Place in St Pancras in 1861.  There was a Compton Street, but this seems to list a tenement block which stands on Harrison Street, with exits on Compton Street.

I use The Genealogist for address searches, although some people have said that they have success on Ancestry on some censuses by putting in the address into the keyword search.  I haven't tried this myself, because I prefer the search on The Genealogist (I subscribe to both).

Best Wishes,  Nick.

However, there was a Compton Place in St. Pancras in the 1871 and subsequent censuses (courtesy of Findmypast)

JenB - I'm trying to find Hannah Richardson, born Guildford (or possibly Alford), Surrey 1817. In 1851 she is with husband Thomas Richardson at 6 Brown's Terrace, Camberwell and in 1871 she is a widow at 25 Compton Place, St Pancras. I (along with many others) have tried everything to find her in 1861 without success.

I was hoping by searching for these addresses I might find her with an incorrectly transcribed name  :(
