Frederick Noah BAILEY
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 22:02 BST (UK) »
I am in New Zealand and now have the death certificate of Frederick Noah Bailey who died in NZ in August 1903 aged 48, I guess he was born about 1855.
HIs birthplace was Trowbridge and he was a son of Isaac Bailey, a "restaurant keeper" - no mother is given but I found him on the IGI in which his wife is given as Harriett Knowles.
I also found what appears to be the same Isaac on the 1881 census and he was a "tea and coffee house keeper" he had two children at home at that stage who were Byfield and Ellen, unusual name that Byfield, he was a basket maker, not even sure it was a "he".
I also found an earlier Isaac Bailey who married a Sarah Coles (or Coler).
Can anyone see any earlier census which gives more information about this family - I guess there were more children and was Isaac always in the tea/coffee business.
I want to fill them out as people and not just names and dates so am interested in any other info,

Births December qtr 1854

Noah Bailey Melksham  5a 102

Melksham was the registration district for Trowbridge but I am puzzled as to why no mention of Frederick - just Noah?

When did he arrive in NZ

Wow - many thanks for all the replies. I have received the death certificate of Frederick Noah Bailey who died in Southland, New Zealand on 18th August 1903, he was aged 48 at time of death, he was an upholster.
He was born in Trowbridge, his father was Isaac, a restaurant keeper, no mother given.
He emigrated to New Zealand on the Western Monarch, listed as just Noah Bailey, arriving in January 1878. He married Margaret Blee from Cornwall who also arrived on the same ship.
They had many children and amongst the name of their children were Isaac, Harriett Helen, Eli, Frank (Harriett Knowles who married Isaac had a brother named Frank)
He appeared to have emigrated alone as Noah Bailey, and I wonder if he added the Frederick after he arrived here for some reason.
With information given in dates, places and names, and with all your collected wisdom, does it appear very likely that Noah Bailey, son of Isaac of Trowbridge is the same Frederick Noah Bailey I have here on this death certificate - I really look forward to a reply on this.

BAILEY Joseph = BAILEY Ann 8 Oct 1822 Trowbridge

I am not seeing baptisms to Joseph and Ann or Isaac and Harriet in the Trowbridge Parish Church apart from one adult baptism.

Sarah Ann BAILEY b 17 July 1849 and baptised 2 Jun 1886 Trowbridge St James parents Isaac and Harriett.

Given the very biblical names, you may find the families were non conformists.

Yes you are right about the non-conformist angle as I saw on some history site about Harriett Knowles who married Isaac Bailey in 1845, she was, according to the information given, baptised in the Tabernacle Calvinistic Methodist Church in Wotton-under-Edge, Glos in 1825.
