George & John Ellis
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 21:28 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone can help me please.

I am trying to locate any other details about George E J Albert Ellis born 1902 and his brother John Albert Ellis b1906 both born in Haggerstone, London.

Their parents are George Ellis b1867 who was a Metalworker and his wife Ann Elizabeth Ellis b1861 Norfolk. They were both married before, and it states on their marrage certificate that they were widower's. Ann's married name before was Austwick, and her maiden name was Harmer.

I have found them on the 1911 census, living in 20 Brownlow street, London, NE.

I am :-

1. Unable to locate a death for Ann Elizabeth Ellis and George snr Ellis

2. Locate either George jr or John Ellis, marraige or death certificates

If anyone can help me i would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you Sharon x

Hi Sharon

These are the coverage charts of FreeBMD which is transcribing the GRO indexes

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/progress.shtml

You will see marriage coverage up to 1916 is complete and good to about 1931 and then very hit and miss.
Death coverage is complete until 1909, and good up to about 1935 and non-existant thereafter.

The original General Registry Office indexes can be found on websites like Findmypast but you will need to purchase credits to search them.

http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp

First you really need to translate the names you found on the 1911 census into possible birth registrations in the GRO index to get a more exact date of birth.

e.g.

a possible

Births Sep 1901
ELLIS  George John A     Shoreditch  1c 90

A birth sometime between July, August and September of 1901 (census night 1911 was 2nd April)

This man's marriage is on FreeBMD

Marriages Jun 1921
Ellis  George J A  Heybourn  Hackney  1b 699
Heybourn Doris W               Hackney   1b 699

Hi,

I have looked in Ancestry, GenesReunited, Family relatives, IGI ....

I still can't find a birth for either George E J Albert Ellis b1902 or John Albert Ellis b1904.

I have gone back a few years on them both, but still can't come up with anything.

As far as i know they were both born in Haggerstone, their father was George Ellis and mother was Ann Elizabeth Ellis.

I just dont know where to go from here.

Hi Shazzie

Haggerstone is a district in Shoreditch adjacent to Hackney so either registration district would fit but particularly Shoreditch.

So other than there is an E written in the 1911 census for George (E) J (perhaps John) Albert (A) which could of course be an error, then the birth registration already given

Births Sep 1901
ELLIS  George John A     Shoreditch  1c 90

would fit.
Census names can be in a different order to those on birth registrations which is something to bear in mind for John Albert. They can also not be accurate as they were largely remembered from memory in an age that was nowhere near as bureaucratic as today e.g surprising that both sons had a middle name of Albert, though less surprising that one might have got John as a middle name and the other younger one John as a first name. Perhaps there was a confusion on just which son got Albert as their middle name. It depends how tired from a days work the head of household was when they filled this form in, whether they'd come in from the pub, whether they were actually there when the boys births were registered and could now remember the names chosen and their order. Did we put in your brother's name or your father's....? Whether they's forgot to fill the schedule in and then the census enumerator turned up and there was a rush to get it done. There are quite a few reasons why errors occurred in census returns.

There is a John Charles registered in Shoreditch in the December quarter of 1903.

A possible marriage for him also in Hackmey registration district.

Marriages Dec 1925
Ellis  John C  Moring  Hackney  1b 731
Moring  Winifred G  Ellis  Hackney  1b 731
