new on here
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 15:34 BST (UK) »
Have just started to try and put together a family history, and found this site.
the names so far that feature in my lot are the Geary (my lot, seem to have stayed in Southwark area for years) Martyn (think they came originally from Cornwall though its a guess, think had coffee shops) Williams ( had coffee shops, in London) Bedfords (Wantage Oxfordshire I think) Clark (Southwark my grandfather sold horse meat) Laundy(Southwark area seem to have been hawkers and costas)
So much on this site not sure how to best use it, any advice would be appreciated.
Have seen at least one mention regarding the Martyns that rang bells

Hi Mike

Welcome!

The best plan is to have a read on How to Use Rootschat and the other beginners' threads first.

Remember to ask if there's anything unclear - we try our best to help.

It's best to post just once for each query, which avoids duplication.

Have fun!

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

one of the first names tried to get info on was my grandmother, Ada GEARY (LAUNDY) found marrige details Southwark 1d 116 1907 Sep, death details Camberwell 1d 998 1927  age 37 (not surprised amount of children she had) but can not find any birth details, was hoping that would have give proof of name of her mum, do have a first name Susan (but not sure its right) but not a surname.
Probably done things wrong way round but have put together a tree without that much evidence, but money is tight and thought that this would allow me to spend on the key members once had a fair idea correct person, but seemed to be stuck at the first hurdle.

Just to clarify - it seem Alfred GEARY was the groom and Ada LAUNDY the bride.

Have you looked for them on the census, to try to establish where and when she was born?

It sounds as though she was married very young, if the age at death is accurate.

Yes thats them have all the census record, know a fair bit about them, on my mums marriage certificate father in law down as a costa, on some census he is shown as a hawker, its a birth cant find. So far have 10 kids am sure of and have been led to believe there are more, incredible!!!

This isn't straightforward!

I wonder if it was a second marriage for them?  If it was, it might explain why you can't find the birth.

Marriage

Dec 1890 St Saviour Vol 1d Page 73

LAUNDY Edward Charles
SMITH Susannah on the same page

On the other hand, there is only one Charles LAUNDY on the 1891 census and he's a lodger with a family (PAYS?) where the wife is called Susan.  This Charles is aged 40, single and a butcher.  Seems most unlikely ...

Just seen your reply - what we need is the marriage certificate information then!

Let us know what you already have in detail please, cos its a waste of time looking for them if you already have the records.

Kind regards, Arranroots

Answering my own questions here but they are down as Edward and Susannah on the 1891 census, so the marriage I posted above looks good.

You might be looking for SMITH births then!!
