Missing Boag in 1841
« on: Friday 03 July 09 22:15 BST (UK) »
Can anyone solve this please?
I have Thomas Boag (1786) in 1841 living with his children  John (1829) Edward (1832) and  Isabella (1827) in Westmoreland Lane, Newcastle.
His other sons, Thomas (1822) is lodging in Westgate, and and William (1822) is married to Isabella with 2 yr old Hannah in Pilgrim St.
But the family is not all accounted for.
Mary Ann (1827) is missing.
She and her sister Isabella are on the 1861 and 1871 C as servants at 13 Lovaine Place before they both married and moved away.
I am used to Boag being mistranscribed as Bray etc, but I have searched in vain for Mary Ann in 1841.
Any ideas, anyone?

George Cowin 30
Mary Capsticks 15
Ann Boag 14  FS - not born in county
Walter Parker 15
Ann Nixon 25
Elizabeth Walfpeny 13

Not a ideal choice I know

Thanks both for your time and trouble
Westmorland seems a long way away, but I did expect her to be a servant, in view of her future occupation.
The Belford one seems a possibility, but that one is only 10 (if we are to trust the 1841 ages!)  and Mary Ann would have been 14, so noticeable more mature.
Not Sure! ???

ages on censuse are not to be trusted,,,especially in early ones,,,,i believe they were rounded up/down in the 1841,,,,will check.,,,,,,,,,,,,,in the 1841 census ages were rounded down !!!   so if you were 14,,you would have been recorded as 10 !!

On 1841 census, a child aged 14 years should have been recorded as just that - 14.

The rounding down to multiple of 5 yrs was only for those aged 15 yrs and older !

So said the instructions to enumerators- which were obeyed - or not !

Precise age seems to have been given for all the other children on that page.

The number '1' looks a bit odd - not like any of the other 1's on the page.

Hi Liz,

Could you tell me if any of your Boag family moved to Hull? I am looking for a William Wilkinson who married a Sarah Boag (Boak) in 1798 in Sutton in Holderness.
