« on: Friday 03 July 09 09:03 BST (UK) »
I believe in 1872 a W J Kane or Kane was born and baptised in Millisle could some kind person check the Presbyterian register for his baptism and obtain his names and also his mothers name, I have found that his father was a Francis Kane or O'Kane of Millisle a ships captain whose name is among my interests.
W J O'Kane was curate in Belfast and Banbridge and the vicar of Ashbourne Derbyshire he also was a author.
Thank you Dennis

Dennis,
I googled Millisle Co.Down and found several sites on the Presbyterian Church including one which shows a photograph of a gravestone erected by Francis Kane in 1908. I assume that most of the script is illegible.

All is suddenly becoming clearer, it appears there was a Francis Kane and a Francis O"Kane both natives of Millisle. the former is the one of my interest and  it appears he had at least 3 children, one in Londonderry, one in Scotland and a don't know where ! This Francis (died 1909) and his wife Jane nee Cree and two of his children , one a centenarian are buried in the Kane plot in the Millisle Presbyterian grave yard, I was told by a person who knew the centenarian that he was a ships captain hence the birth places of the children.
Now it could be the Francis O'Kane was the ships captain, a big coincidence to have two in one village? this Francis is also buried in the same  graveyard and I believe it is his tombstone referred to by kingskerswell, the grave area appears to be pretty crowded as it contains Francis O'Kane 1904 Isabella 1901, dau Mabel , dau Emma, dau Majorie, dau Lily, dau Elsie and her husband and one of their children.
I guess what I shall have to do is obtain a copy of Georgina Kane's birth certificate she was born 14th May 1892 in Londonderry and that would sort out the ships captain business, I hope!
Thank you Dennis

I have a Robert Kane, farmer, of Ballylisbredan, Dundonald (1795-1866) in my tree who married Mary Cooper around 1820 and had the following children:- Sarah, Robert, William John, David and Elizabeth.  I don't know anything about his father.

Francis appears in later generations as a family name and there is a tradition that earlier ancestors were seafarers, originating in the Bushmills area of Co Antrim.  Francis is a family name in the Kane family of the Causeway Hotel near Bushmills.  Does any of this ties in to the information you have?

I only have records back to c 1837 and my Kane's were all in the area of Millisle and Ballycopeland I just called up on Google Earth Dundonald and then Bushmills and they are a fair old hike from Millisle especially Bushmills so I think it highly unlikely there is a connection.

I have just received the birth certificate for Georgina Kane born 14th May 1892 at Nicholsons Square Derry, her father Francis was not as I was led to believe a ships captain but a carpenter, I guess he could have been a ships carpenter, his movements suggest he could have had a nautical connection, from where did you get the information that Georgina's father Francis was on the ship Balcultha? too much of a coincidence to have two Francis Kane's with a daughter Georgina?
