Ships Record for Louis HAHN
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 11:04 BST (UK) »
I had a distant relative named Louis Hahn who was born at Carcoar NSW in 1855.  Around 1890 he was working as a publican in Bathurst but he suffered some financial problems and was declared bankrupt in 1891.  Sometime thereafter he left his wife and is believed to have travelled overseas, possibly to New Zealand.  I'm wondering whether there would be any shipping records which could identify when and where he travelled.  Much appreciate any advice or leads.

Best regards,
CM

BHSyd,

I looked here http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=42

quite a few HAHN names  none seemd to match Louis but these are from Victoria. Can't see outgoing records for NSW but others may know where to look.

Some  sites for NZ

http://www.yesteryears.co.nz/
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~shipstonz/shipstonz.html
http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/

A search of NZ records reveals a Louis Hahn died 1926 aged 74 which puts his dob fairly close

http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/home/

and NZ newspapers have several menetions of Louis Hahn, but can't tell if it is any connection to your Louis.

Good Luck

Hi,
As you do not give his wife's name or tell us whether he returned to Australia after his travels or say whether there was a second given name for LOUIS,, it is hard to know whether this is a possible death entry for him or a son of his or neither ;D

11442/1950  HAHN,  LOUIS STEPHEN A father LOUIS JOSEPH mother BERTHA ROSINA @ ORANGE

Likewise, this marriage may be meaningful
4209/1883  HAHN,  LOUIS to   TREANOR  MARGARET @ CARCOAR

Dear Robyn & Sue,

Thank you for your suggestions.

Margaret Philomena Treanor is indeed Louis Hahn's wife but we can't find any record of her living with Louis after around 1891.  She died at a sister's house in 1929 and was buried at Rookwood with her parents and sisters, no mention of Louis on the headstone.

We don't have any record of a second given name for Louis.

Louis Joseph Hahn (b. 1894) is a nephew of Louis Hahn (b ~1855).

We have checked the Louis Hahn who died in NZ in 1926 aged 74.  He came originally from Lithuania so he's not our Louis.  The hotel keeper Louis Hahn who is mentioned in various Westland NZ newspapers is related to the Louis from Lithuania, so once again he's not our Louis.  From what I can piece together, this NZ hotel keeper's full name is in fact John William Louis Hahn.

Anyway we can't make any headway in finding Louis after 1891 which is why I thought shipping records might be useful, but I'm not very familiar with the NSW outbound records.

By the way, Louis' parents were Englebert (Engelbert) Hahn and Anna Aloisia Theresa Maria Kremer.  They came originally from Eltville in the Rhineland.

Best regards,
CM

Hi Syd,
I am not able to see LOUIS HAHN's birth in 1855 in NSW.  You may have a different source.Nor do I see him arriving with the family in 1849.

There is a mention of LEWIS HAHN on the 1878 electoral roll together with other family members in Carcoar. Can list if you need.

Dear Sue,

Yes the birth record for Louis Hapan is Louis Hahn.   I've seen at least 10 different ways of spelling Hahn.  The clerks certainly had trouble with it back then.

I've seen electoral roll entries for Louis Hahn at Bentwick St, Bathurst in 1890/91 and 1891/92.  But he's no longer at Bathurst in the 1892/93 electoral roll.  There are also bankruptcy records for Louis Hahn dated 1891.  I'd be interested in any record of Louis after 1891/92.
