Given the shere size of Brighton in the 1890s and the number of schools in it, you would have to know which school you wanted and to then contact East Sussex Record Office to see what records of that establishment (if any) they have on file.
See from the 1881 that he also had elder siblings, have you tried tracing them on later censuses?

A John of about the right age who was a Musician & Bricklayer's labourer (interesting combination) appears in the 1901
No trace of Alfred in 1901, could he have been a serving soldier then, or is it possible the handwritten family name has once again been mistranscribed in the indexes?
Darrington, Dorrington, Dallington, Harrington, Hannington, Barrington etc. The combination seems endless.
