Where is Tyrfield? Please, help!
« on: Monday 29 June 09 13:04 BST (UK) »
In the wills index that is on the Bucks archives site I believe I located a will for an ancestor (At first glance it appears promising.)  Anyway, the index gives the place as Tyrfield. I haven't been able to locate this place after using google search, mapquest or an old map I have. I used the will index search again and typed Tyrfield in alone to see how many "hits" I would get. I just got one which was the person I was interested in. The only place that comes up using "google" or mapquest is Therfield in Herts. Would a will from Herts be in Bucks? I'm supposing that Tryfield is a small village. Does anyone know?
Thanks!

Donna

Everyone, thanks so much for your help! I think the best thing for me now is to check out the deaths in these places and hope one of them pans out. Again, thanks!

Hello Donna

Don't bother looking at Tyringham - it's most definitely Turville.

Thanks Orpheus!

I'll check Turville first. I was leaning towards there, especially with its connection to Therfield in Herts.

Hi Donna
Just found this site -

http://www.lutonparanormal.com/buckinghamshire/popups/turville.html

"Turville is a long thin village at the bottom of a deep valley which has a long association with film crews. On top of the hill overlooking the village is Turville Windmill which was the home of Caractacus Potts in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, also has some notoriety as it appears in the TV series The Vicar of Dibley.

Over the years the village has had various names including Therfield, Tyrefield and Tyrefold and in the Domesday Book Tilleberie. The name is believed to derive from the Old English words thyrre and feld which mean ‘dry open land'. In the 2001 census the population was 317."

Looks as though it's definitely Turville you're after.

regards
Rich
