Caroline WALTON
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 15:03 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information on Caroline WALTON nee RIPPON, who was born in 1870 in Truro, Cornwall, England.
She moved to Durham, England with her parents William and Eliza RIPPON, before the 1881 census.

She married Isaac WALTON, 18th August, 1889 at St. Catherine's Church, Parish of Crook, Co. Durham.

ISAAC and CAROLINE had four known children:-

JOHN, ELIZA JANE, ISAAC, and JAMES WILLIAM who was born 4th March 1894 at 28 Woodifield Rows, Crook, Druham.

So far I have not found this family on the 1891 census even though I have used variants of the surname WALTON.

On the 1901 census I have Isaac WALTON listed as a widower,
occupation Singer Sewing Machine agent. He is living with his son James William age 7 and his widowed mother, Jane.

ELIZA JANE is living with CAROLINE'S sister Lily Johnson, on the 1901 census.

I am also interested in finding the death date of Caroline WALTON which was probably between 1894 and 1901.
My efforts so far have come up short.

Any help with this brick wall would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Irene Mawdsley, Ontario, Canada.

Hi

Quote
On the 1901 census I have Isaac WALTON listed as a widower,

The 1901 shows him as married - his mother is widowed

It might be worth having a look at the 1911 entry.  I can't see a Caroline Walton on the free 1911 index in Durham

Hello

The 1911 Census Index seems to show a family consisting of ....

Isaac Walton born 1869
Lizzie Jane Walton born 1892
James William Walton born 1894
Isaac Walton born 1897
John Walton born 1899

... living at Chester le Street.

No sign of Caroline.

The birth registration indexes show the children (except James William) to have each been born in the year previous to those shown on the census.

So we have children born up to 1899 which narrows Caroline's death down even further

It would be interesting to know Isaac's marital status on the 1911

If he still shows himself as married - either Caroline has done a runner or she is possibly in a mental hospital

By placing the word "Widower" into the "Keywords" box on the Advanced Search the results page indicates that he was indeed a Widower

Thanks for replying.

I have the image from the 1901 Census and under marital status it looks like a W rather than an M.
Other folks at the library thought so too.
Just wished they had written Wid. as they did with Jane.  if indeed he was.

Caroline is not on the 1911 census listed as Caroline Walton but Isaac and James William are and residing in Chester-le-Street, as you say.

Eliza Jane was married in the 3rd qt. of 1911 to James B. Rogers.  I will send away for that marriage certificate (next month!)  as it should tell me the mother's maiden name and if she is deceased.

Were the family listed altogether on the 1911 census?  I only have the indexes to go by but family lore says that John was missing in action during WW1  but if born in 1899 he would only be 16 yrs.old.

A lot more work to be done and I really appreciate your input.

I have wondered about Caroline being hospitalized but can't find any census information on Durham institutions.

Did she marry outside of England as no information is shown about mothers on English marriage certs

She was married in Chester le Street but didn't they start giving out the mother's information in 1911 or was that just for births.
Maybe I am getting confused with Scottish certificates which give much, much more information than the British ones.

Irene

You say that the family were living in Crook.

Have a look at the first message on this thread, which relates to memorial inscriptions in the Cemetery at Crook. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,319186.0/topicseen.html

The name Walton features on the list.

It would be worth asking if there is an inscription for a Caroline Walton (to do this simply use the reply button at the very end of the thread and post a new message).

No harm trying!
