Michael Coughlan Convict under Insurrection Act to Australia

Michael Coughlan was tried at Rathkeale, Co. Limerick & then imprisoned on the hulk "Surprise", Cork. Michael was then put on the ship "Mangles" for transportation to Australia in 1822. He arrived in New South Wales in November 1822.
Michael was convicted under the insurrection act.
The above information came from the National Archives site. It also states that he had a wife & four children & parents living.
There was a petition filed also.
I have looked on the archives site but they will not look up the information & suggest a professional researcher!!!! they wanted 150.00 pounds upfront!!!! My goodness.
I have the document reference no. & wondering if there is a cheaper way to get a copy of the information held at the archives. I'm happy to pay just not 150.00.
Appreciate any suggestions of ways to obtain copy

Hello Bev,

unfortunately I can't help from the Irish end but have been having a look at the Australian convict records which are available on line. Often lots of information can be ordered online from some sites but this has not been the caase searching for Michael.

While there are 2 men of this name none match your Michael, one arrived in 1793 the other from London in 1828.

This might suggest
1) He was not transported and served another form of sentence instead
2) He may have died on the ship on the way out.

I feel that the first is likely as I can find little trace of the other men sentenced with him at the same time.

Hi Bev,

You are lucky that he had a petition, sometimes they give loads of information, family, wife, children etc. If you have the ref no, you just walk into the National Archives and you get the document in minutes, I take it that he is listed in the transportation database in the NLI website.

I don't know whether you are still looking for info on Michael Coughlan. I don't think he was on the 'Mangles'. I believe he was on the 'Prince Regent' in Jul 1824. I have a lot of info on him if you need it.

There are 2 Michael Coughlan's from Limerick as convicts. One was born about 1804 from Whiskey Hall. He is the one who came on the 'Mangles' in 1822. He married Mary Reardon. The second one was arrested with John Hurley and was born in 1792 in Limerick and was transported on the 'Prince Regent' in 1824. He claimed to have 4 kids. In Limerick I believe his wife was Catherine Sheehy. Two of his children eventually came to Australia.

Michael was noted as 18 years of age,  Co Cork, a Ploughman, 5 ft 6 ½ inches tall, pale complexion, black hair, hazel eyes.  He had been tried at Cork’s Special Commission Court, in 1821  and sentenced to transportation beyond the seas for Life.   He arrived Sydney NSW 8 Nov 1822.
