My gr-gr-gr-gr grandparents' youngest child was named Archibald Ainslie Herriot.  I have been trying to find out where the Ainslie came from and have been assuming that he was named after a relative.  His parents were David Herriot/Heriot and Helen Donaldson.  If any of these names appear on your research documents, then perhaps we are linked through the Ainslie name???!!!??  Contact me, if so.  Thanks!

Hi my family also descend from the Midlothian Ainslies.  My gr gr Grandmother was born Janet Ainslie in 1839.  She moved to and died in New Zealand (married Thomas Messer) in Midlothian then emigrated.

Janet's mother was Ann Oughton and her father (as far as I have determined) was George Ainslie, born 1814.  However the NZ records have her father as Hugh Ainslie, but we can find no record to substantiate that.

If you would like to compare notes feel free to get back to me.

Hi dragonlady403,

I have looked up LDS (https://familysearch.org) website for Ann Oughton, any record in Scotland. It appears she was married twice, first to George Ainslie 10th December 1836 then to David Neil on 26 Jul 1852. I suspect that George Ainslie died prior to 1852.

It also gives Ann Oughton's birthdate of 25 Jan 1816 and christening 10 Feb 1816 , all at Lasswade, Midlothian.

Hi,

I have found Janet and her mother in the 1851 census in the Roslin Inn, Lasswade Parish, Midlothian.
They are staying with Janet's grandmother Margaret Oughton, who is 55 and Innkeeper and a farmer

Margaret Oughton   55     Innkeeper and Farmer
Anne Ainslie           35     Daughter, I suspect a widow.
Gavin Oughton           25     Son and Farmers Assistant
Robert Oughton           24     Son and Farmers Assistant
Margaret Ainslie           13     Granddaughter, Janet's sister
Janet Ainslie           11     Granddaughter
Margaret Mcivor           22     House Servant
David Neil                   21     Astler (Ostler) future husband of Anne Oughton/Ainslie
Robert Stedment   18     Ploughman
James Liddle           13     Cowherd
Thomas Stracham   21     Bleacher

That's brilliant Tom!  Thanks so much for all that info.  Up until now I had about 4 names and the town of Lasswade, Midlothian and not much else!

I am also trying to figure out when she and her husband Thomas Messer emigrated to NZ so any and all information helps.

Regards, Carol

Tom, according to records on Ancestry.... George Ainslie died in 1878 in Louisville Kentucky, USA at age 63.  Perhaps he wanted to emigrate to "the new world" and Jane wasn't interested.

Do you know if they had divorce back in those days?  Does that seem plausible?

If the facts are correct, and I believe they are, George would be one of the Scottish immigrants that settled the Appalachian area of the Southern USA.  I was just watching a show about them and their Scots roots and language!

Regards, Carol
p.s. I see she got herself a "younger man"!  Go Ann!

Hi Carol,

I am not sure about the USA connection, there seem to have been Ainslies in Kentucky for years. I searched Shipping records and Ellis Island records, but no results.  According to one in the 1850 census, he had married and had 2 children, so he must have been in America since 1846/47 at least. I can see a marriage on 19 Nov 1844 for a George Ainslie to Mary Thirwell in Jefferson County, Kentucky.

Maybe you have other proof, that I have not come across yet.

It looks like George's parents emigrated to the USA (not sure when).  Hugh Ainslie and his wife Janet Lindsay Ainslie.  He born 1792 in Ayreshire 1792 and 1878, she born Lasswade 1792 she died 1863.

According to info you provided, their son George (born in 1814 in Scotland) married Ann at age 22 in Lasswade.

I wonder if he left because his parents emigrated?

This all presupposes that my information is correct (and I certainly wouldn't place my life on that!)
