Lewes look up, please.
« on: Friday 26 June 09 21:19 BST (UK) »
Charity Carr, born in Nutley in 1819, married William Gander in 1841 at St John Castro Sub, Lewes. I am trying to find the name of her father. Mother was Frances Page. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike (in the great white colony). ;)

She's living in Lewis in 1841 but not with her family - but probably her future in-laws   ::)

1841 HO107/1120/1/8/31/7

Henry Gander 58
Martha Gander 50
William Gander 25  - Probably her future husband ?  :o
Richard Gander 15
John Gander 12
Thomas Gander 10
Charley Carr 20 - it is Charity but has been transcribed incorrectly

Charity Carr / William Gander
3Q 1841  Lewes, East Sussex  Vol: 7  Page: 466

If you order this marriage certificate it should tell you her father's name and occupation. IGI have a submitted entry giving the date of marriage as 08.08.1841 and Charity's death as Feb 1900

Hi again

As a matter of interest, the 1831 census for St John Sub Castro still survives and there is just one family of Gander listed

Gander James, Tailor, - family consists of 3 males and 5 females

Laurina and Chris,

Thank you for th replies/ Henry and Martha Gander are Charity's father-in-law and mother-in-law. Perhaps when the census of 1841 was taken, William and Charity had not yet married. I do have a copy of the birth registration but am not able to decipher Charity's father's first name.

I have the names for their children. I, also, have a Mary Gander, born 28 June 1857 to William and Charity. James, (1831 cebsus), is of no relation, that I have found to date. I have to wonder why, in 1831, that James would be the only Gander listed as Henry and Martha settled in Lewes in 1817. My great great grandfather, George Gander, (son of Henry and Martha), was born in Lewes in 1822, (although, All Saints).

Mike,
Charity was a 3rd great grand aunt of mine, she married William Gander 8 Aug 1841. William died in 1881, then in 1883 she married a James Pierpoint born circa 1813, Isfield.  William and Charity had ten children.
I have info re the Carr and Gander genealogy, BMDs, census etc

Ian,

Thank you for the reply. William's father, Henry Gander, is my 3G grandfather. I have some info on William and Charity but am trying to fill in blanks. Please PM me and tell me more. I can, possibly, fill in some info for you, as well.
