Porter/Barnes
« on: Friday 26 June 09 10:57 BST (UK) »
Hello.    Ena Ethel Barnes was born in Camberwell South London in 1917.   Her mother was Ethel M. Porter.  I believe that she came from Norfolk, and  married A.Barnes in Camberwell.    I have every reason to think that the mother Ethel M. came from Norfolk.   I think this because Ena  died in North Walsham, Norfolk, in 2003 aged 86.  I find it odd that Ena went to Norfolk after WW11, when her parents had died.   So I looked up Ena's mother's maiden name  - Porter - and she came from Norfolk.  Is this why Ena went to Norfolk, on her own after the war?   If someone could suggest a cemetery where Ena may be buried, that might be a start for me.  On the other hand is there a way of finding out where Ena was living in Norfolk up to her death. Any ideas will be smashing.  Thanks Soloist.

Getting Ena's death cert may well give you an address where she died - and be a first step.
Did she make a will? That would be worth looking for, as would give her address when it was made.

I must admit I do not follow your logic about Norfolk.  You say you think her mother came from Norfolk, and then go on to say you looked her up and she did come from Norfolk - so have you actually found Ethel M Porter on a census or some other evidence of her birthplace?

Did Ena marry?

Have you got Ethel Porter/ A Barnes's marriage cert? Or before that, have you got Ena's birth cert, which will confirm her mums maiden name (where did that come from?) and provide Mr barnes's Chrstian name.

Thank you for your thoughts on my Porter / Barnes query. The way I came to my conclusions is as follows.   I thought that I'd go for a marriage  of a Barnes  in Camberwell a couple of years before Ena's birth.   Low and behold I found one in 1915  giving Ethel M Porter as the bride.   I then followed my hunch about Norfolk where Ena died, and I immediatley found Ethel M. Porter. born about 1891.  I am thinking that her family must have moved to London at some point.  That' about it at the moment.  Onwards and upwards!.  Thank you again. Soloist

Thank you for your help.  I hadn't seen the marriage of an Ethel A . Porter. Bit of a coincidence if two Barnes's married two Porters.  I need to go further into these events and get a certificate or two.  I appreciate your help. Thank you very much. Soloist
