...he was in england for 1911 census, cant find him on ni census for 1901,

the 1901 census details are not on line on the National Archives website yet. (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/)

They are due to start processing these as soon as the 1911 data is completed - hopefully later this year.

you should be able to order a cert for him from the GRO based on just the index information you mentioned in your first post...

see : http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

download the form and fill in the details you know...make sure these details are included :

 Name : Edmund McConnell
 Record Type : Birth
 Registration District : Lurgan
 Date Oct - Dec 1886
 volume 1 / page 625

Thanks Shane - but would it not matter that he was born in the north of ireland? i am looking forward to doing a wee bit of research anyhow - did it years ago for my mum in law. so going to research me dads granda, and then my mums side! Glutton for punishment. So i will just have to wait and be patient!

Another wee ask - have joined a site and spent all day trying to search for my Cumbrian Granny got nowhere! spent all me credits
could any kind person do a quick search for
Sarah Ann Gibson born approx 1907 cockermouth cumberland
her parents were john and bessie Gibson Westray Farm

much obliged Gail

we were all part of the United Kingdom back then - i.e. pre Independence in 1922..
So the index books and registers in the GRO (Dublin/Roscommon) cover the whole of the island of Ireland.
