Family tree software to suit 6 & 7 year olds.
« on: Friday 19 June 09 04:57 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Does anyone know of a very simple family tree program we can download to suit six and seven year olds?  We need to be able to use it on 4 classroom computers.

:)

Hi Ru, there is a freebie called  PAF... Personal Ancestral File that is put out by LDS and on their familysearch site.  Maybe you could have a look at it abnd see what you think. I guess quite a bit depends on how literate and computer literate also your 6s and 7s are...

Others may come up with other suggestions but as PAF is free to downalod and use you could peruse it.
Please let us know what you decide as others may come up with the same question ;D

I question the need for this age children to use a computer for genealogy.   If you search "genealogy for children" on the web, you will get plenty of ideas on introducing them to the concepts using processes that will be creative and fun for them.

There is something to be said for having them sit down with paper and drawing out a tree with themselves, parents, and grandparents.  Children don't gain the ability to do abstract reasoning until 11-13 years usually, so unless they know their great grandparents, even these won't mean much to them.

If you are determined to do this, a moderately able high-school age programmer should be able to create such a program for you in BASIC, or even web-based, in a weekend.
I suspect that the market for such a simple program would not attract a professional programmer to expend the time required.
