Workhouses, Manchester
« on: Thursday 18 June 09 07:29 BST (UK) »
I am looking for websites that can assist me with workhouses in Manchester area.

My GGG Grandfather James Collier and his wife Ann, died in 1844 and 1849 respectively, leaving behind three younger children, William b. 1836, Margaret b. 1838 and David b. 1840, apart from elder children Mary Ann b. 1822, Sarah b. 1824, John b. 1826 b. Ann b. 1828, Thomas b. 1831 and James b. 1834.

1851 census has not assisted me as to the younger children's whereabouts, nor the 1861 census, so I am thinking that maybe the younger children were put into workhouses after their mother died in 1849.    They would have been 13, 11 and 9 at that time.   Cannot find them living with elder siblings in 1861 census.

Any assistance that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for this find, very much appreciated.   It is always difficult with research when you live in Australia, and also of course the unfilmed census of 1851.

regards

Migky,

I am unable to obtain access to the 1851 unfilmed census, through the site you have given me,
are you able to give me more information to assist me.

I would really love to know what happened to the whole of the family, I've been struggling for some time to find where they all went to.

Migky,

Yes, thank you, I am sorry the unfilmed census is working okay, it is the Workhouse website that won't come through.  Not to worry, I've found more information on that now, thank you all the same.
The 1851 unfilmed census is great, but unfortunately I cannot get ages or DOB's to ascertain if I've got the right family members, to see who they some of the family were living with, after their parents died..

Can I ask please (in my ignorance, I am still finding my way) how you get the Swinton School information on the 1851 census, I've had no luck on this.

Regards

Jan

You should be able to look at the original census on either Ancestry or Find my past web site but are pay to view sites.
The 1851 census you require for Swinton school is posted above this by Rossliv.
