I wasn't saying you were wrong about there being no reference between the two certs.

Just simply clarifying that it isn't only the adoptee who can get both - anyone who knows the relevant info can obtain them is all.

problem being for maxxangels' query is that official adoption didn't start until 1927, so any adoption prior to that time was informal.

Thank you everyone, you've been a great help in clarifying that for me. So I guess the only way to be certain is to order the certificate and see if it has 'adopted' and the right birth parent(s) on it. I have no idea what his adopted name would be, but I don't suppose that matters too much as all I really want to do is prove the rumour. I have discovered how far fetched these rumours can become, particularly on my father's side of the family!
