Hit a brick wall in Guildford!
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 09:50 BST (UK) »
On my maternal grandfather's line I have got as far as my 4 x g grandfather but then I have hit a brick wall!

He was James Turton, cordwainer - married to Hannah Kettle, St Mary's Guildford 11 July 1814, both "of the parish".
He was buried 5 Oct 1833, aged 41 years, Stoke Next Guildford.

That is all I have on him - his wife died the following year (though I have her line going much further back).  From his age on the burial record, he must have been born in 1791/92 - but I can't find a birth for him anywhere! I know that Turton is a name usually found "oop north" but I have discovered another pocket of Turtons in the Andover area, although I can't link my James to them.  ???

Any ideas for how I may pinpoint James Turton's birth (and parents) would be very gratefully received!

A possible suggestion for a baptism in Hampshire

James Turton baptised 1st March 1792 when 4 days old -  parents Joshua Turton and Sarah nee Briant. Joshua was a shoemaker. James was baptised at Goodworth Clatford (that's near Andover, just over 2 miles and about 46 miles away from Guildford).
Joshua and Sarah had five other children in Andover.

Elizabeth 1794
Charlotte 1796
Edward 1798 (buried Andover 1803)
William 1802 (buried Andover 1809)
John 1805 to parents Joshua and Sally.

John was living in Southwark on the 1851 census - a bootmaker.

However between 1806 and 1819 a further 10 children were baptised in Chilbolton just over 3 miles from Goodworth Clatford to a Joshua and Elizabeth Turton. The eldest child baptised in 1806 (29th December) was James, followed by Hannah 1808, two Edwards 1809 (buried Chilbolton 1809) and 1810 and Edward 1811 and Elizabeth 1812 (buried Chilbolton 1814), Selina 1814, Joshua 1817, and twins George and Mary in 1819.

There doesn't seem to be a burial for the first James. Sarah was buried in Andover 19th March 1806 aged 38.

1851 census HO107 1683 folio 61
Chilbolton Street Chilbolton Hampshire
Joshua Turton 66 Head Married Cordwainer  Chilbolton Hampshire
Elizabeth Turton 71 Wife Married Cordwainer's wife Chilbolton Hampshire

This Joshua would be too young to be the father of James baptised 1792.

The IGI, from a member submitted entry gives the death of James Turton baptised 1806 as 23rd July 1883 in Hayes. His occupation on the 1881 census was grocer, baker and draper.

There are two Joshua Turton marriages in Hampshire

28th April 1791 to Sarah Briant in Chilbolton
2nd September 1806 to Elizabeth Judd in Chilbolton

A baptism of a Joshua Turton in Hampshire occurred in Chilbolton 30th May 1784 to Edward and Ann and a Joshua Turten was baptised 23rd February 1771 in Barton Stacey to parents Edward and Sarah about 3 miles from Chilbolton.

There is a burial of a Joshua Turton in Amport about 8 miles from Chilbolton on 22nd June 1827 aged 56.

Valda - you are a total star! Thank you so much for your help.

I am sure that the first James that you've found, born 1792 to Joshua Turton and Sarah Briant must be our man. A cousin and fellow researcher had made the Andover or Chilbolton link, but it was rather tenuous as we couldn't find a birth for a James in the right year. I have the parish transcripts for Guildford, but as his birth did not appear there it was clear that he was born elsewhere, and we couldn't get a birthplace from the census's as he died in 1833. The cordwainer/bootmaker profession seems to have carried on through several generations - James' son Jonathan was also a bootmaker, in Chelsea. The profession also carries on back through James' wife's family.

Many thanks again for your help.

Best wishes, Lisa
