Schofield (b. 1833, I think)
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 09:07 BST (UK) »
If what I have done so far (and got through Rootchat and other places, of course) is accurate, I have traced a William Schofield, a cork cutter living in Preston around 1881 census.

He is the husband of Catherine Schofield, who I believe is Irish (the classic census phrase "Born - Ireland", I'm afraid).

All things being correct, one of their daughters is Mary Theresa, from whom I have a Ruth, from whom is my grandmother eventually.

I would love any more info on William - I think born around 1833, in Chester. With some of his children born in Preston, some in Ireland, he must have travelled to or from with his wife, if I'm right.  Any guidance on how to follow William further back would be appriciated.

Many thanks
Preston - Pennington/Hawarden/Bland/Schofield
Glamorgan(shire) - Beattie/Bevan/Williams/Ellis-Anwyl
Wigan - Pennington [I know, I know...]/Pugh (Haydock area)

Also of note -
Willoughby Hawarden -  have his War Records but what happened to him?
Nimrod Pugh - just a fantastic name!

Hi doktorb  :)

From the Census birth years of the children, it seems likely the family was in Ireland between at least ca1857 (dau Mary Theresa) and ca 1863 (dau Catherine) and certainley back in Prestron Lancs by abt 1868 (dau Sarah) ?  They appear on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 in Lancashire, England.

Probable
1851: 33 Lune Street,Preston,  Lancashire
HO107 /  Piece: 2266 /  Folio: 158 /  Page: 31
Head John JOHNSTON 27, Cork Manufacturer, b Preston
Wife: Ann 30, b Fulwood Lancs
Children: William 4, Thomas, James 1 - all born Preston
Servant: Mary Ann HUBBERTY? 18, unm, House Servant, b Preston
App: Will'm SCHOFIELD 18, unm, Apprentice, b Chester, Cheshire

Possible (and William & Catherine did have a daughter Ellen b abt 1860 Ireland)
1841: Parish of St Bridget, City of Chester, Cheshire
HO107 /  Piece 129 /  Book: 1 /  Folio: 16 /  Page: 27
Ellen SCHOFEILD 50, Charwoman - N
Peter SCHOFEILD 12, - N
Wm SCHOFEILD 8 - Y
/
Ann FARRADY 30 - N
Joseph FARRADY 13 - N
Wm FARRADY 1 - Y

Any idea what Catherine's maiden name was?

Cheers

Did I ever tell you that I love this forum?

That's brilliant, thank you very much.  The name Reuben rings a bell, think there's a relative further down the tree with that name. Good work y'all, thanks :)
