Ryan, O'Malley(Mealey etc) Tower Hill
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 06:55 BST (UK) »
Looking for links to family of Stephen RYAN and his wife Catherine (Kate) nee O'MALLEY, daughter of Matthew and Mary O'Malley ( (O'Mealley. Mealey) who were living in tower Hill near Cappamore when their daughter Josephine was born in 1837. Other children were Mary Anne 1840, Thomas 1843, Catherine 1844 and Anne 1846.

Stephen RYAN was dead by 1858. His wife and daughter Catherine emigrated to Australia in 1859 to join Johanna and Mary Anne who had arrived in Sydney in 1858. (The fate of Thomas and Anne is not known.)

Thier fares were paid by an uncle already in the Colony, one Dennis MEALEY. The only death for a man of that name has parents Tomas and Catherine, so Dennis seems not to be the brother of Catherine Ryan as her father was Matthew. Was he Matthew's brother?

Any help with sorting out this family greatly appreciated.

Hi There,

I read the O'Malley name with interest. Do you know if Catherine had any sisters?
I have a Julia O'Malley married James Slattery. Her children, Ellen, Catherine, Honorah, Mary and Michael all immigrated to Australia in 1841.
Do you know these names?

Sorry I don't recognise your names, but that doesn't mean there's no connection. All I know about Catherine (Kate) O'Malley is that she was born about 1811, daughter of Mary Ryan and Matthew O'Malley / Maley / Mealey and she had a brother Dennis born about 1815. It's probable there were more chldren.

Don't know where she was born, but after her marriage to Stephen Ryan she lived in Tower hill near Cappamore, LImerick,
so perhaps she came from round there.

Sorry but that's all I know. Does any of that ring a bell?

Hi warrawillah,

I was curious as you have the name Ryan, this name comes up a lot in this Slattery family. I am unsure of it's connection.

Julia O'Malley (Slattery) was from Limerick but i cannot work out the parish she was from... i have attached the picture i have put many places but no one can seem to tell me where this is in Limerick.

Hello
I have read the above entries with great interest. My GGGG Grandfather, Kennedy Mealey was listed as being from Doonass in county Clare when he enlisted in the British Army(1825).  He could sign his name and that is how he spelled it, however in various different records about him he is spelled Meally, Mealley, O Mealey etc.  to the point that the name of his family that stayed in Western Australia is Maley.  He  is listed in the Mt St Lawrence Cemetery Limerick as having been buried on Sept 15 1882 74yo, address Asylum.  We understand that he became ill in West Aust, went back to England where he was discharged from army, and then he went to Limerick.  His wife and children stayed in West Aust.
I would love contact from anyone researching MEALEY (or similar), Doonass (Clare), and I would love to know what people think that the address Asylum might mean
cheers
Kylie

Hi my family surname is Meally originally from Castlecomer/Crettyard in Kilkenny.  The surname has changed over the generations it was previously Mealey and even Mealy before that.
