Joseph Carter Manchester
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 02:53 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Any help with any details of Joseph Carter born 1864 Manchester would be much appreciated, he's the furthest back I can get on my mothers line, he eventually moved to Leicestershire and married Annie Manship, he may have died relatively young as Annie married again, again my brain is stuck so any ideas here would be groovy,

Steve

Hi Steve and welcome to rootschat :D

Your Joe Carter, if he was still alive, should show on the 1881 census probably in his parents house.  YOu can lookup the 1881 census free online at the LDS website called   familysearch.  Go to the familysearch home page and follow from there. That would give you another firm fact if you find him.

You should be able to date his marriage and death on freebmd site.

let us know how you get on.

Hi Steve,
It is very hard to pinpoint Joseph without his parents names.
There were 2 Joseph Carters born Manchester 1861-1865.
Unfortunately both in the same year.

Births Mar 1863
CARTER  Joseph    Manchester  8d 323
Births Jun 1863
CARTER  Joseph     Manchester  8d 304

1891 Census Lodging House Burton on Trent Staffordshire
Class: RG12; Piece: 2203; Folio 66; Page 16
Joseph Carter 27  bManchester  Horse Dealer
Annie Carter 25    b Leicestershire
Mary C Carter 10/12  b Burton-Upon-Trent, Staffordshire

This is the marriage index of Joseph and Annie in Staffordshire.

Marriages April-June 1891
Carter  Joseph    Burton  6b 541
Manship  Annie     Burton  6b 541

Birth of Daughter Mary Caroline
Births april-June 1890
Carter  Mary Caroline     Burton  6b 411

Deaths July-Sep 1900
Carter  Joseph  38  Burton  6b 258

In 1901 Census Mary C  Carter is with her grandparents Richard and Caroline Manship in Leicestershire. Annie is not there.
 Regards
Mariac

Hi Charlotte and Mariac,

Many thanks for the helpful tips and lookups, sometimes you need another perspective to help you out of a rut.

I think the marriage certificate of Joseph and Annie should be my next step. Very interesting info from the 1901 census too. Joesph being a horse dealer is funny I have another ancestor who was a molecatcher, so much for royalty in the genes,  ;D

Thanks again

Steve

Hi Steve,
The marriage cert is a good way to go... it gives you a firm point from which to work and it also will give you the names and occupations of the fathers of both the bride and groom... so back a generation in one hit.

Keep us posted how this goes,

charlotte

Thanks Charlotte,

A newbie question, seeing as I am based in New Zealand, what is the safest way to order marriage certificates? I have a daughter in London, is there an agency there she could get one for me or do you have to be in Leicester?

You can order certificates online via the General Register Office http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,381764.0.html using the references that charlotte has given. This is generally the cheapest way, an agency would do this for you, but at additional cost.

They will deliver to New Zealand or you can get them sent to your daughter, which may save a couple of days if you are impatient.

There is more detail about the process on this thread, post no 4.
