Hi

His entry on SDGW tells us that he was a Special Reservist (3/).  Probably a pre-war Regular as Ady mentioned:
The Special Reserve was a form of part-time soldiering.  Men would enlist into the Special Reserve for 6 years and had to accept the possibility of being called up in the event of a general mobilisation and otherwise undertake all the same conditions as men of the Army Reserve. Their period as a Special Reservist started with six months full-time training (paid the same as a regular) and they had 3-4 weeks training per year thereafter.

All regiments had a unit (or more) dedicated to the administration and training of the Special Reservists. For example in most infantry regiments it was the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion.  Their job was to provide reinforcement drafts for the active service battalions. Staffed by regular soldiers, each SR Battalion had a complement of 8 officers, 1 RSM, 38 NCOs, 10 Drummers and 40 Privates of the regular army.

Here's his entry:

Reid: Nicol: Peterhead and Aberdeen
McDonald: Greig: Milne: Aberdeenshire
Moreland: Lanarkshire, Whitehaven in Cumbria and Ireland
Cunningham: Lanarkshire, Cumbria and Ireland
Halliday: Falkirk, Stirlingshire and Ireland
Redpath: Stirlingshire and Banbridge

My, My  you have all been very busy!  There is a lot of information here for me to digest. I will have to contact a distant family member to find out about births to Richard and Mary for me. He lives not to far from the Leeds Library where he check the registers.

I would like to request those details that you found Ady as Thomas was Richard's 2nd cousin.

Does anyone know when the 1st Bn West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own) was shipped out to France?

I too have not been able to locate either Richard or his wife Mary on the 1911 census.

Thank you all for the wonderful input

Anita
