North Merchiston Cemetery, Edinburgh.
« on: Monday 15 June 09 22:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to confirm that my great grandparents are buried in North Merchiston cemetery, Edinburgh. I was there on Saturday 13th June 2009 but unfortunately the vast majority of the stones have been pushed over on their faces. I spent two and a half hours there looking at every stone without finding them.

They were;

Andrew Fairweather died 13th August 1916 the death was recorded in the district of St George, Edinburgh.

Jessie Fairweather (MS. Lindsay) died in 1920

I have also been given a plot number, but I am not sure as to it's accuracy (No 727).
None of the stones were numbered in the cemetery as the have been in recent years.

Can anyone tell me where I could get a record of there burial?

thank you,

John.

Hi John, welcome to rootschat  :)

Edinburgh council is theoretically responsible and hold many records, some others are in Libraries, a list is available here:
http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/internet/leisure/libraries/explore_your_library/family_history/cec_edinburgh_graves_for_the_family_historian

I don't see North Merchiston listed there though although on the Scotland's people website it is listed as being within the jurisdiction of the City of Edinburgh Council. They probably don't want to have to answer too many difficult questions given the state it is in.

Hi John and welcome to rootschat

I phoned Edinburgh Central Library re my g grandmother's burial site and was told to email the following address:

mortonhallcrematorium[at][/blue]edinburgh.gov.uk (Replace [at] with @)

I had a very speedy reply from a lady who gave me the name of the cemetery, her plot no. and a map with the area marked was attached.  I was very impressed with the service.
