Pickards of Sileby
« on: Monday 15 June 09 21:58 BST (UK) »
Hi,

This is a long shot, but i am trying to find out about William Pickard from Sileby. He was married to a Mary Farquhar who came from Aberdeenshire Scotland. I think the dates that they were born could have been around the mid 1700's They had a son also called William born 1805 in Sileby, who ended up in Aberdeenshire where he married a local girl in 1825.

I would dearly love to know why Mary Farquhar from Aberdeenshire ended up in Sileby. Any info of the Pickard family would be appreciated.

Hi Anne50, found some info and dates which hopefully may help you with the Pickard search.
William Pickard christened 09/Mar/1806 Sileby
William Pickard christened 09/May/1775 Ashby de la Zouch
William Pickard christened 26/Apr/1753 Tamworth
William Pickard christened 04/Sep/1726 Syston
William Pickard marriage 29/Sep/1725 Syston
William Pickard christened 18/Jan/1701 Cold Overton.

All the Williams except the last on list have William listed as father.I am not suggesting the names and dates here are necessarily a family line, but they are all in the Leicester and surrounding area and would fit chronologically so perhaps at least some will provide you with useful information. Good hunting1  TL

Dear Anne,

Here is some more info which you may or may not be aware of. There are four christenings of  a Mary Farquhar in Scotland between 1770 to 1780, but the most likely one would seem to be on 14/ Feb/1773 at Drumoak, Aberdeen, a village which lies between Crathes and Peterculter, and has the Drumoak-Durris Church of Scotland. The other possible is a christening on 19/May/1776 at Logie Pert down the coast in Angus. There is also a marriage at Longside, Aberdeen (which is near Peterhead) between William Pickard and Elizabeth Brown on 03/Dec/1825.

With regard to what might bring a Scots lass from Aberdeen to Sileby, one guess might be that she had followed the herring fleet down to either Yarmouth or Lowestoft and perhaps had met William if he was visiting East Anglia at the time. It was a big industry for many, many years and there is much historical background to be found on the subject.  :)   TL

Hi,

Thanks for your post. I have found Marys christening, but its her marraige to William Pickard that escapes me. I don't know if she married in Sileby or if they came up here to marry. The William Pickard and Elizabeth Brown that you mentioned is my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents, and i managed to see their grave at Longside a few weeks ago. I live only a few miles from there, but because my dad was illigitimate, and his mother died when he was 2, and his grandmother died when he was 5, he was fostered out. He never knew the Pickards at all. This is a mission now to find out what i can. Thanks again for the info.

Anne

Can you help please?

My late father (b:1918, illegitimate) was brought up in Aberlour Orphanage (1924-1936), even though he was not an orphan.  I have recently found that my family name, if following the male side, would have been Pickard.

I am a descendant of Robert Pickard, William & Elizabeth's son and William (born Leics) & Mary Pickard’s grandson.  We know that Robert was a cabinet maker and had a business in Peterhead and his place of death is listed as Prison Buildings.

Do you know where Robert’s grave is?  We have visited Longside and found William & Elizabeth Pickard’s grave.  We will be up in Scotland again soon and will visit the Peterhead area but will only have a short time.

Hi Malc,

I don't know where Robert is buried, but i will try and find out. I too was at Longside cemetry to see William and Elizabeths grave, but did'nt come across one for Robert. Do you know what year he died?. We have 2 old cemetries in Peterhead. St Peters cemetry and Constitution Street cemetry. He could maybe be buried there.

With regards to your late father, my dad might have ended up in an orphanage after his mum and granny died, so i will look into the Aberlour one.

Do you have much info on Robert?  I will dig out what i know about the family. Hope to hear from you soon

Anne
