Norfolk Place Name - Holley? Obley?
« on: Thursday 24 February 05 22:51 GMT (UK) »
While doing some research with the 1851 and 1871 census for Lancashire, I have come upon a Norfolk birthplace that I cannot identify.  The 1851 census lists the birthplace as Norfolk, Obley (or Olley or Holey).  The 1871 census lists the same woman's birthplace as "Holley nr Norwich."

I am completely unfamiliar with Norfolk.  Can anyone tell me what town or village is referenced here and where it is located?

Thanks!

Chad

Mmmm a bit of a puzzler, but then you have not given us much to go on.  Lots of places could fit bad handwriting and an attempt ot write a place phonetically - Horsey, Sloley, Oby and Oremesby come to mind.  Perhaps if you told us the name and date of birth someone might be able to put the clues together.

Hi Chad,

if you go to the Notfolk Transcription Archives at
http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/index.php

there is a tag for parishes,  click on H  and then O.  That will give you some variations to think about.

Another possibility is the Registration Districts page for Norfolk on GENUKI
http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/nfk.htm

e.g.
Flegg
Created 1st July 1837. Until 1850 listed as East and West Flegg.
Sub-districts : East Flegg; West Flegg
GRO volumes : XIII (1837-51); 4b (1852-1930).
Ashby with Oby,

Brian's idea is probably the best: other certificates may give different spellings, which would help us find it ...

Good luck !
Bob

Can you give us the details of the 1871 reference and then we can go to ancestry & have a look at the original.

That often helps.

Can we have that reference sop we can look at the original please???

Another thought is Stoke Holy Cross.  Dont think people call it Holy but who knows what they did in 1871??

I have to admit I keep thinking of possibilities.  Alby is another one!

I, too, have wondered if the place in question might be Alby, but am providing some additional information as requested to see if someone might be able to help me figure this out.

The person whose birthplace is in question is Frances (Slaughter) Heap, the daughter of Samuel Slaughter (a soldier, according to her marriage record), who was born in Norfolk about 1820.

Frances Slaughter of Oldham Road, Rochdale, married Thomas Heap, also of Oldham Road, on 25 December 1848, St. Chad's, Rochdale, Lancashire.

The couple, their two-year-old daughter Mary, and a 10-month-old visitor (almost certainly a niece), Alice J. Slaughter, are listed in the 1851 census on Hamer Mill Road, Wuerdle & Wardle, Rochdale, Lancashire.  (Schedule No. 41, p. 11, folio 428, piece 2246, HO 107.)  This census entry lists Frances's birthplace as "Norfolk, Obley [Olley? Olbey?]"

The 1871 census lists Thomas and Franes [sic] Heap on Martin Row, Rishworth, Halifax, Yorkshire.  (Schedule No. 106, p. 25, folio 70, piece 4409, RG 10.)  This entry fairly clearly lists Frances's birthplace as "Holley Nr Norwich," although I can identify no such place in the list of Norfolk parishes and/or registration districts.

Since Frances was not living in Norfolk, I would not be at all surprised if the name or spelling of her birthplace was written or pronounced incorrectly by her and/or the census enumerator.  Still I would be very grateful if anyone could help me figure out where she might have been born.

I have a copy of the 1851 census entry in djvu format, which cannot be posted to this website, and a copy of the 1871 census entry in gif format, which is too large to post.  I would be happy, however, to send them by email to anyone who would be willing to look at the actual entries to see whether s/he can make out the place of birth.  Thanks again for your assistance!

Hi Chad,

can you just crop a portion of the 1871 census, with the name and some other text in it (for comparison purposes).

Just in case you don't know how to "crop", there are instructions here:
