Looking for info on 'Ellis Mansfield' born Timsbury Manor
« on: Sunday 14 June 09 22:09 BST (UK) »
Greetings....

I have been researching my fathers side of the family tree, but pickings have been a bit slim. I found a witness to my Gt grandfather's wedding (John Charles Mansfield) on 11/11/1918 at the consulate in Cairo. This witness was called Ellis Mansfield. I have been trying to find out what kind of (if any?!) family relation he is. Unfortunately I don't have much detail to go on.

The only information I have found is from an 1881 census which lists Ellis age 20 as a scholar living at 142 Ebury street, St George Hannover Square, Belgrave. (Class: RG11; Piece: 100; Folio: 36)

However, what was interesting is that Ellis' birthplace Timsbury Manor, Hampshire in 1861, is the same birthplace as John Charles Mansfield's father ( also called John Charles Ellis Mansfield b.1860) for which I have the birth certificate. Hence the posting in Hampshire.

So what I'd really like to know, what kind of place was Timsbury Manor?  John Charles Ellis Mansfield's father (Charles Edward Mansfield birth found IGI in 1828) was in the army and I have  only been able to find him in the 1851 and 61 census at all... have found no record of his death...

Was there an Army base near there?....I know that Charles Edward Mansfield was in the 33rd Regt of the Foot, but there were family connections to the 60th Regt of the Foot also through in-laws who were def more powerful. My family (as far as I am aware) have no connection to this area apart from the one birth that I found...

Any info or suggestions about how to find more information about the mysterious Ellis...?

Thanks, Laura

Thanks, I found that also on a previous google search, have just realised that it is not too far away from aldershot.... so it would tie in with an Army connection!

Hello,

I'm sure I can help you with regard to Ellis Mansfield. Ralph Dutton who built Timsbury Manor was married to Isabella Mansfield. I'm not sure of the exact connection but I'm sure I can work it out. I have lots of information on Timsbury Manor as I live here!

Andy

Hi Andy,

That would be great if you could find anything out - I'm absolutely at a dead end with that branch of the family, as they seem to have gone abroad on a regular basis.

Ace!

I have had a look at the St Marylebone records and Isabella Mansfield was born on 30th Dec 1824 and Baptised on the 17th Jan 1825. She was Bapt by a Rev Edward Mansfield.....so thats another line to pursue.....and I have found a few siblings, one called William Rose Mansfield (b.c1820) and Horatio Mansfield (b.c1820/21). There is an address listed but can't quite make it out.

Hi

Thats interesting!

I can't place Ellis Mansfield's connection to Isabella yet. What I have worked out is that Ralph Dutton the Lord of the Manor (Timsbury) spoke in Parliament in 1867 regarding the Simla Court Marshall see the link below

http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1867/aug/06/motion-for-an-address

He stated that he was related to Sir William Mansfield who was involved in the court marshall. William Mansfield was a General who was commander in chief of India.

The following I got from Wikipedia. Sir William Mansfield was the fifth of seven sons of John Mansfield who lived at Digwell or Digswell House.
Isabella was the daughter of John Mansfield making them siblings. Which makes Sir William, Ralph Dutton's brother in law.

I've just read your post again. Yes William Rose Mansfield is the same as I mentioned above. How we get to Ellis from here I can hazard a guess and say he was a newphew of Isabella.

Hi Timsburyjones
I am doing some research into the history of Timsbury Manor House for a book on country houses. Please can you tell me something about it's C20th history? I believe it was a school or crammer of some description in the 1950s and 1960s? I have found a Jones as a local councillor living at TM. Is that you?? (If so, am green with envy.....)
