I was a Gotobed before I married..A few of our family actually had the name changed by deed poll as it was so disliked, I come from March in Cambridgeshire so not far away...looking back I think it a bit of a shame as it is an unusual name, at the time I was overjoyed as it lead to a lot of bullying etc at school.
I am sorry to hear that but I and my children had the same problem at school, which is why they now go under the former part of the double barrelled surname, rather than the latter.
Children will however always find something that they can pick on you for and what was a hindrance in my youth has turned out to be a good (or bad) thing in my mid years (I am now 42, 43 in Feb!)
It gets you remembered, and you rarely have to tell people your name more than once.

Hi Chas

Sorry I wasn't telling you off - as JJ said, the written word often seems harsher than it was meant to be.  :) :)

Good luck with your research.

Thats no problem! I see you are researching GILCHRIST! My mums brother is married to a Westbrook, her mum was a Peggy Milton (deceased) Peggys Mums name was Rose Mabel Gilchriest B. Jun 1874.
Roses dads name was George Gilchrist B.1828, so it appears we may have something in common too!

Hi Chas

My Gilchrist ancestor travelled from Fife to Boston, Lincs in 1798.  Before that we have no idea who his parents etc. were.

Lizzie, Are you connected to the Gilchrist family who lived in the London Road/Park Road area of Boston from the 1940s onwards?

Don't know for sure Roger, I know some of the Gilchrists stayed in Boston, so I guess I am a very distant relative.  My 2 x g.grandmother was a Gilchrist (granddaughter of the first one to reach Boston) but she moved away during her marriage and eventually ended up in the Manchester area.

Seems likely Lizzie, I may have a photo, if so will attach it to an email. By the way, did you find that information about Winchester please?
