I have this surname in my somewhat extensive Cambridgeshire tree. Does anyone know any detail of its origin please?

Thanks David, According to the ONS surname website there were 225 Gotobeds in England and WAles in 2002. Now going to read what you found for me.

David, Checked it out and am disappointed. Expecting something much more erotic! Checked out Luffman whilst I was on the surnames DB, and they say it only started in its present form in 1800 approx. Complete rubbish, I have it back in its present form into the 16th century, 1565, 1597 etc.So where they got the information from I don't know. Tried to register to correct, but from the speed of the site I would still be waiting. Thanks again.

Hi there I have a Gotobed in my family tree as well. There was a William Gawtobedde of Sussex in 1332, so although I don't know where Gotobed comes from, perhaps it derives from this gentleman

Regards

Alison

Alijet, Why not check out the link given in reply No.1 above? DEspite my caveats about it, the site does give some useful information.

I seem to remember a Mrs Gotobed in an Enid Blyton book from my childhood days :)

Did Enid give her maiden name and details of her husband?

Probably totally irrelevant, but...

I remember a Gotobed shop, in Ely, in the '60's, selling either furniture, or cars.
