Griffiths Valuation query
« on: Tuesday 23 December 08 17:25 GMT (UK) »
I have a question, regarding Griffith's Valuation.  My sister found our GGGrandfather listed, along with some other members of his Family, we assume, listed in the 1857-58 Griffith's Valuation, in Trila Dillon, County Roscommon, as tenant farmers.  In emailing some people for help, she was informed if they were tenant farmers during those years, there should be a record in the "Cancellation Books".  My guestion is "What are the "Cancellation Books", and, where can we locate them?.  My sister is planning a trip to Ireland, in the Spring of 2009, to visit her son, who will be attending the University of Limerick, starting in January, 2009, through the Summer of 2009.
Thank you for any help you may give me.

the Cancellation books hold records of land transfers from the time of Griffiths, each change is recorded in a different colour ink and the previous note is crossed out. Every so often a new book is started.

I think the County Roscommon records are in the office in Land Registry office in Nassau Street. (Setanta Centre, Nassau Street, Dublin 2 )

If you already know the townland from Griffiths it should be possible to start the search in the right area. The boundries do sometimes alter slightly over the years so be prepared to search adjacent townland registers also.

Meanwhile, here's a very good site for searching Griffith's Valuation where you can view the actual printed pages and search by name or place:

Thanks, Bob.  That's exactly what I did just now.  I learn something about this computer everyday.  I've only been  using the computer for about 1 1/2 years, and, there's alot of things I don't know.  Thanks again and Merry Christmas. :)
