William Whiteley WIGGINS b.1811, City of London
« on: Saturday 13 June 09 19:46 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for 1851 census data:

1.William Witterly/Whitely/Whiteley Wiggins b. abt 1811 City of London, barge builder.
(In 1841 lived in Putney with Ann (nee Spratley), b.1811 location unknown, and
Ann b.1839.)
2.Ann b.1811 Mother
3.Ann b. 1839
4. William Whiteley b. 11/10/1839 - no mention of him in1841
5. Charles b. 10/08/1848 (in Clerkenwell house of correction- mother imprisoned)

1861 finds him in Lambeth, still a barge builder, married to Louisa (possibly Bryant), but I cannot find a marriage. First wife Ann died 1853.
I have no idea of William's parentage- no birth certificate in evidence.

Any help appreciated, please.

I know this is not much help but Wiggins and Spratley are names that come from Leafield, in the Forest of Wychwood  in Oxfordshire it has it's own web  page and is has a Spratley list of marriages.

I think you have the wrong family in 1841, re Putney.

The family you want are in Lambeth with children Amelia 4, Elizabeth 2 and William 1.

From the Old Bailey online

3rd April, 1848.

ANN WIGGINS , unlawfully obtaining 30s., the moneys of   Charles John Howell, and others, by false pretences; to which she pleaded
guilty.. Aged 29.—Recommended to mercy— Confined Six Months.
(There was another indictment against the prisoner for uttering a forged copy of a marriage register, upon which MR. CLARKSON offered no evidence. )

Firstly, thank you so much for your prompt replies.
Thanks Dave, for Leafield lead, which I'm going to pursue.
Thanks Sue, I found the Old Bailey reference earlier. Please tell me what sites you use to find census refs. I use Ancestry.com so I had to do a lot of manual searching through census records to get the right page for 1851, but eventually found it. I don't think it is possible to look up a specific reference in the form which you gave me. I haven't yet looked up your suggestion for 1841, but I do know that Ann Spratley's mother was also Amelia, so it sounds highly likely.
Thank you so much. I may well ask you for more help with other brick walls in the near future, e.g William Wiggins' parentage.
Best wishes,
 Judy
