Hi Brephy,

Jane Yates was my GT GT grandmother. She worked in service in a house in Liverepool around the time she met and married Edward Weigh. I really don't know why he would have been in Liverpool. I have the marriage certificate which confirms Jane's father is Jospeph. I have a death certificate for Joseph which says Martha Yates was present at death. I assumed that Martha was Josephs's daughter but after what Ivor has said it could have been his wife. I did find Martha Yates (sister) in a workhouse in Liverpool after Josephs death. That's probably all I know. I was not aware of Sarah Yates. I asked Liverpool records office to look up the yates in the Woolton area but they were unable to find anything for me so I gave up looking about 4 years ago. I stumbled across this website which has refreshed my interest. Look forward to your reply - I need to look up Maghull on map.

Hiya Shirley...the Yates family first appear in Liverpool in CHILDWALL in the 1600`s..of course Childwall was a village just outside Liverpool at the time...the same as Woolton and Much Woolton ( now merged into one village)  a lot of work for you but good reading...go to
www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html and click
all events
surname  put   yates
then search...goes back to 1530`s and you will see the Yates family gradually edge toward Liverpool via Burscough /Aughton /Ormskirk thru the 1500`s to 1654 and one lands in Childwall (very close to Woolton ) then you will have to look for any Woolton abodes ...on freebmd Woolton comes under Prescot
anyway - have a look and enjoy...allan

Hi Shirley
Jane Yates was my Gt-Gt-Grandfathers sister-in-law, Maghull from Childwall/Woolton is about 9 miles.

Hi Ivor

Are you related to the Weighs? Sounds like it. thanks for the geographical info!
Thanks to the info that Allan has provided I have now found some more children of Joseph and Martha ie Alice, Ellen, Thomas and Joseph (St Chads). I have a Martha Yates in my records, born 18919, but cannot find her on official records now and I cannot remember where I found her 4 years ago. Martha was present at the death of Joseph with a different address to Joseph so I think probabaly a daughter.

Thanks to you all for the information.  I had almost given up on the Yates as I kept going into a dead end.    Sarah Yates was my greatx2 grandmother and I thought she must be related to Jane as my great grandmother had her baby at the home of Jane and Edward Weigh.  I shall have a good look at the site you give Allan. Sarah was married in Childwall.

Hi Shirley
Yes I'm related to the Weigh family, my grand-mother was a Weigh, are you directly related to the Weigh Family or the Yates?, if you wish I can invite you onto my Family site, but I would need your email address.

Regards Ivor
