I'm always interested in 'sleuthing' the North Hampshire parishes, where I have personal interests, and I'm keen to research records of Nonconformist families who ventured into the wider world and whose descendants wish to find their 'roots' in the UK.  I find it quite fascinating and I'm very fortunate to live in close proximity to HRO where I can easily access many records.

So far as this particular PAICE family is concerned, I feel satisfied that we have established the link of emigrant Thomas to his siblings baptized at Basingstoke London Street Independent Chapel.  I'd feel even more confident if we could find Thomas recorded just once as a marriage witness to one of his sisters prior to emigration, but that entails the purchase of another certificate from the GRO.

I established contact with Tom ATKINS [now that's a wonderful name for a 'Brit'!] but it appears that much of his Basingstoke PAICE research emanated from you, Rob, so the ball's back in your court.

In the meantime, I've typed up the Gazette entries relating to Thomas PAICE's public appointments and also an Excel sheet showing the Table of Rates for fining owners of strays impounded at Concongella.  If you'd like copies forwarded to you, you can post your personal email address via PM here.  If I were you, I'd be very interested in pursuing mentions of Thomas in the Minute Books of the Stawell Shire Council as the original notice of the appointment as General Inspector was superceded with particular responsibilities only a few months later, and the 1867 job title 'Inspector of Revenue and Nuisances' sounds very grand!

As you've probably spotted, Local Government history is another of my interests, so it's good to get an insight into the practices of a colony regulated by statutes passed by a distant British Government.

Hey,

I am new to this history search. I know next to nothing about my mothers side of the family and I want to put together something before my grandmother gets much older. Below is a brief description of what little I know, I have read all of your comments and I am wondering if their is any likely hood of a connection somewhere.  ???

My Grandmother said that her family never talked about their family's past so information is limited. someone contacted her late brother years ago and asked if he would contribute information as they were putting together a family tree, but unfortunately he declined.

There were five Paice brothers Three of which were enlisted in WW1. There parents were; George Thomas and Elizabeth Paice, native of Richmond Victoria.

They had 5 sons.

1. Fred Paice- Chief petty officer - Age 16
2. Bill Paice - Light horse
3. Harry Paice - ran away and joined WW1 at 16 - Served on western front, "25th machine"Harry Paice - January 1915 France and Belgium
4. Jim Paice - Married with one daughter
5. Charles Edward Paice

Charlie - was a Christian chaplain who hoped to become a Methodist Minister after the war but unfortunately he died in Gallipoli at age 21. - reports Gallipoli Graveyards state: PRICE, private, Charles Edward, 2006. 7th Bn. Australian Infantry, A.I.F killed in action 8th - 9th August 1915. Age 24. Son of George Thomas and Elizabeth PAICE. Native of  Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Sp.Mem.14
August 15th 1915 he wrote a letter "greater love has .................?"
Private of the 5th re-informant, 7th platoon.

Note the name change of the last name.

William Albert Paice- 01/06/1881 - Richmond VIC

George Paice - 18/06/87 (Nana's father) - Burnlee Melbourne VIC

Thats it, thats all I have to work with. Apparently their was an article about the paice brothers, my mother was given it but threw it away, (GOD help me! ;D) I haven't located the source of the article yet.

Charlie, bless him, was quoting from the Bible:
John 15 : 13 'Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.'

Let's hope that Rob has encountered this branch because the Christian names of several of the boys also feature in his branch.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website has Charlie's surname PAICE.  There is also another local lad commemorated on their website:  Victor Alfred Godfrey PAICE, son of Alfred Robert and May Paice, of 13, Mary Street, Richmond, Victoria.  http://www.cwgc.org/

Thank God for that, I really hope there is a connection.

Its such a shame when family history is not passed down. I have always been a big fan of knowing where my family came from, what they did, how they shaped the people we are today.  :D

Hi jjuba,
I have a fair bit on information on the George Thomas Paice tree, it is the largest Paice group in Australia. I am at work at the moment but I will advise tonight when I get home. From memory George was born in Battersea Surrey, married in the UK and had about 3 children there before emigrating to Australia as a family.
I have the news paper write up on the Paice Boys that went to war, it is a great read. I have a scanned copy if you wish to put your email via PM. It is good that I can be a help to someone else after everyone has been such a help to me.  :)
I will post again tonight. Rob

That's brilliant, Rob!

Just in case these may feature somewhere in your PAICE research, I just found this on an Australian newspaper site concerning lost family contacts extracted from Lloyd's London Weekly Newspaper:

PAICE, Harry, sailed in the Duke of Bucking-
ham from the Royal Albert Docks on 3rd March,
1889, last known address, 170 Nott-street, Port
Melbourne, Victoria. Sister Martha inquires.

Wow, thanks Rob, that is fantastic. My grandmother will be so happy, she has wanted to know about her family for a long time, as have I.

What do you mean by 'email via PM,' I am very new to the chat room thing?

I am so interested in the story on the paice boys, still can not believe my mother threw it out.

Thanks Tegan

Hi All,
I have sent Tegan info on the Paice Boys in WW1.
dee-jay - the fellow, Victor Alfred Godfrey Paice was the cousin of Charles Edward Paice who died in action at Gallopoli. Victor was killed in action 1916, Pozieres, Somme Sector, France.

Tegan's Paice group descended from George Thomas Paice b.abt 1825/26 Battersea, Surrey. Married 1851 to Charlotte Sarah Roots b.1832 Stepney, Middlesea.
1841 census has George's family at Battersea:
James Paice age 35, wife Sarah age 35. (believe is Sarah Elizabeth Wright)
Children: George age 15, Jane 11, Henry 10, Mary 9, Sarah 1.

Thanks for the Harry Paice record, can't see a link at the moment, but sure he will pop up somewhere.
