Just wanted to say...

This is a wonderfull resource on the Metropolitan Police Records that you've put together here, Barnaby.

Many, many thanks for all of your efforts, - it has enabled me to compile more info than I could ever have envisaged possibly finding on Fred Lavington.

Best Wishes, Romilly :)

You are all more than welcome. It gets better the more people use it. I am currently in the process of checking the latter books to make them more accurate.

Hopefully I'll be able to produce more resources of use. I don't know whether to post here lest it raise expectation. But I am working on putting together a map (based perhaps on Google Maps) with pins that show where historical police stations and other police buildings were placed to help put some geography to the research results. Hopefully this will be based in some way shape or form on old police maps. I'll see what comes of it and will of course keep you up-to-date.

Yours, BarnabyP

That sounds like a really useful additional resource Barnaby.

I shall look forward to seeing your map when available.

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hi Barnaby

Re Clarence Frederick Wood and the Metropolitan Police Service.

Many thanks for the time you spent looking for him.  I now have his daughter's birth certificate which gives his occupation in 1928 as Railway Policeman. :P

Whether he went directly from the Grenadier Guards to the Railway Police I do not know.  It was generally family lore that he was in the Metropolitan Police, but as you could see no trace of his entry or discharge this would seem unlikely.

Thanks for your help.

Ceeoh

Hi Ceeoh,

I don't know if this is of any help, - but I found this on the 'History of the Metropolitan Police' Site:

'Records for the railway police of the various railway companies do not appear to be amongst the railway staff records held at the Public Record Office, but information about the numbers and organisation of railway police circa 1900 can be found in RAIL 527/1036. The occasional references to 'Police Department' in the railway staff records relate to signalmen, etc'.

Romilly.

Hi BarnabyP,

Thank you very much for the records. I have been able to find one of my ancestors (Frederick Bowles - Number 67737) in the Register of Joiners, the Attestation Ledgers and the Register of Leavers. Is there any way of finding out if he has a pension record?

Regards,

Mark

Hello markyb74,

I can confirm that Frederick Bowles was given a pension. It is number 15097 in book MEPO 21/31. I've written a little guide about what can be found on the pension documents on TNA's Your Archives at Metropolitan Police pension record details.

Hope that helps, BarnabyP
