Hello Romilly and Ceeoh,

This thread's probably getting a bit long, so I'll recap the various sources of information available.

Guides
- TNA have a guide to sources useful for family history researchers; guide 104
- I've also put some of the same sources with a bit more information on TNA's Your Archives website; Metropolitan Police Records of Service

Sources
- I have uploaded transcripts for some of the Registers of Leavers onto the Your Archives - links from above link. All of the Registers of Leavers can be found on Scribd.
- There are more of the documents detailed on the Your Archive's page on flickr, which can be found by there collections.

Using sources
So far on the Your Archives website there are only the first nine of 13 books of Registers of Leavers. But the information about how to use them can be found here. Otherwise I would recommend using the Scribd link above as it has all the same information that you can use to find the appropriate photos on flickr, should you choose to.

Hope this helps, BarnabyP.

If this doesn't help just let me know.

Hello Romilly,

I've had a look at the Registers of Leavers. I have found a Frederick Lavington in MEPO 4/343 - warrant number 67466. I've also found him joining in the Alphabetical Registers of Joiners and the Attestation Ledgers.

Frederick also has a pension record in MEPO 21/38 pension number 18,657, which you can view at TNA.

Yours, BarnabyP

Gosh!! Thank you so much BarnabyP! I'm thrilled that you've managed to find so much. I will get right on to it now... :D

Hello Ceeoh,

I hope that the above advice was helpful. I have had a look in the records that I have copies of and couldn't find a Clarence Frederick Wood in the Registers of Leavers. I also had a look in the Alphabetical Registers of Joiners and couldn't find a record of him in those either - as I thought there was a chance that he could have retired after the ROLs end. Are you sure that he served in the Metropolitan Police? It's just a thought but is it possible that he served in the City of London police?

Yours, BarnabyP

Hi Again BarnabyP,

I've downloaded & saved everything available, - Many Thanks!

I guess that I need to pay a visit to Kew to see the Pension Records? (And presumably they will hold the details as to whether or not he did actually spend time at the House of Lords/Commons:-)

Thank you so much for your help, - it is very much appreciated.

Cheers, Romilly :)

Hello Barnaby
Many thanks for looking for Clarence for me.  I will check my records again to make sure of his service - it's a while since I looked for him so will have to dig around in the Wood file.

Thank you again

Ceeoh

Hello Barnaby, I have  Thomas Rochester  W.No. 56932 Div C    (Is this St.Jame's?)  Joined   the Met
9 June 1873.   I have this information from mepo 4/352/111.   I would like to know more details of his short stay with the Met, and if any reason was given for leaving   13 Aug 1875, this date on a record  when he joined

Essex force  on   1 Sept 1875 .  approx 2/3 weeks later.

Any help you can offer would be very much appreciated

2mm

Hello 2mm,

I don't know if division C is St. James, but C would almost definitely put it within the more central parts of London, as they seem to radiate out alphabetically from the centre. Unfortunately there aren't many records for that period that would cover Thomas's record of leaving. The Police Orders (MEPO 21) list all of the officers that left the police force and group them into broad areas, so you can find out perhaps whether he was dismissed or resigned. If he was dismissed it might state why but if he resigned (or was forced to) then it merely states this.

Sorry not much useful there.

Yours, BarnabyP
