Hello 2mm,

If I recall I was having trouble finding Thomas in the records. Alas the record you have found may be one of the few. As far as I am aware there aren't any registers of leavers for this time period. Though there should be an entry in the MEPO 21 Police Orders, which should also broadly note under what circumstances he left under - though this is limited to saying resignation, pension or dismissal, or perhaps even transfer in Thomas's case. It might be worth getting in touch with the Metropolitan Police as they have access to some records that aren't in the National Archives which might contain more information.

If anyone else has more info please add.

I know this isn't much help sorry, BarnabyP

Barnaby

Unfortunately it was bad news. I emailed historic store at met and and it appears that my great grandfather was up to a bit of embezzling! I had been told that he'd left under suspicious circumstances.  would there be any way of finding out more info on what he was up to or on him ie height, colouring etc.

Regards
Sue

Thank you, Barnaby, I will try The Met, I have tried a couple of other avenues, with no luck, so far.
I appreciate your help.

I am trying to find out about my gggrandfathers very short police career,
He was John Ballard Lloyd and according to a booklet about people against the new railway,

''where he states he resided when, he went in the police force, which he did on the 16th April, where he continued only until the 26th May,(bring a period of only 40 days), when he quitted without notice''

this was in 1836 I think, is there any chance there would be any records for this ?
thanks

Hello fallingonabruise,

The only record that I have a photograph of is the Alphabetical Registers of Joiners - 2nd from bottom. He should appear in the HO 65/26 but I don't appear to have a photo of this page. His leaving may be in the Police Orders also at The National Archives in MEPO 7.

Hope this is of some help, BarnabyP

Hello fallingonabruise,

Both of the records that I haven't linked to can only (to my knowledge) be accessed at the National Archives. Since you have the dates it should be relatively straight forward.

Hi BarnabyP

Many thanks for making all this information available.

I'm investigating William Thomas BLUNDELL warrant no. 76093 Joined Aug 18, 1890 Left Apr 14, 1897.  Thanks to your site I have found the register pics on flickr as well :)

The family lore is that he was hit on the head trying to make an arrest during a robbery and was sent off to an institution for some time.  By 1901 he was a tramcar driver but he went missing at some point around 1905/1906 and supposedly was never heard from again.  I haven't been able to find a death for him so perhaps he changed his name or emigrated :-\

I live in Canada so can't check the pension records personally.  Is there somewhere I can write to try to obtain further information such as how long  or if any pension was paid etc.?
