I just started researching the Hamilton link, it is my Mum's maiden name.

Her grandfather or Great grandfather (prob grandfather though) was William Hamilton who married two sisters after 1 died. He married Christine initially (who was also known as Margaret I think) then he married Agnes. They were both Allisons from Newton Mearns (Glasgow).

This thread seems to help a bit and when I get more into it, I can speak to my Mum further and my uncle and see if I can get more confirmation of the history.

You can see this William was born in 1853 or 1854 )so I assume he was my Mum's Great grandfather) and had a son William who was age 12 in the 1901 census (Who I assume is my Mum's Grandfather) so it may be a different line from you but will prob meet a few generations back as they often do, especially as they all linked to Shawtonhill.

There are 3 farms and a cottage at Shawtonhill. My Grandfather Robert (born 1913 owned Shawtonhill and East Shawtonhill and then they sold East Shawtonhill to the Strachan family (who are related through to my Mum's mother).

My uncle Robert Hamilton still owns Shawtonhill and the bungalow.

I'll leave you with a bit more of the ownership history on the farms from 1770.

Shawtonhill - Parts held by: by John Allan, David Crawford, Wm Curr, John Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton, John Semple.
Shawton - parts held by: Mr. Hart and Mr. Marshall.

There were many other Hamilton's who held farms in this area and it is hard to say at this point if they are related to your line.

However if you go here:

http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/welcome.aspx

Click on search enter Shawton you can see what records are available and same for Shawtonhill.

Hi

I'm wondering how you got on with the Hamilton research.  My Gt Gt Grandmother was Martha Fergus (or Ferguson) who is listed on the 1851 census living with James and Elizabeth Hamilton.  She was their niece.  Martha's mother's maiden name was Hamilton so I guess she was a sister of James.  Incidentally I live in New Zealand too.
